What i've actually done to combat this in my own personal life is Simply not read any blogs about any movies. See the Trailer only once. I read nothing about the dark knight I avoided all pictures. even when i was at the movie theaters closed my eyes so not to see anything. It Helped I finally saw a movie that i had no info on and enjoyed it.
Same with the new Bond movie I saw the first trailer and that was it.

I read nothing about new comics coming out. Even though I have put a stop to my comic collecting for a bit....... I don't want to hear the hype anymore on anything it's played out.

I acknowledge that what made a lot of childhood shows and movies special was the scarcity and anticipation. But there is no way I want to go back to that situation. I am glad I have most of the shows and movies I love on tap.

Heck, I wanted that since I was a kid. Even though VCR's were out there, I never really heard about them until about 1978. Until then, I wished I could somehow get a projector and films of Star Trek, Apes, etc.

That's why the toys and the comics were so special, they were your own piece of the show or movie you could control and relive through the toys and books. Today's toys have lost that flavor because you actually have the show or movie to watch.

Yes, I also agree about there is too much information on upcoming movies and shows. It's much harder to create a mystique around a movie, show or even a rock band (there ain't no way KISS could've kept their non makeup faces secret if they were a new band trying to in this day and age).

And the mystique around a movie can make it more powerful. For instance, The Exorcist was a great horror movie to begin with but all the rumors about what was in it, how it was done and how much it might've actually been based on something real boosted it's power over audiences.

If the internet and the movie geek culture existed, there would be spoilers, looks at Linda Blair's makeup design and the movie in general would be dissected before and after it's release. It still would be a great movie but it's power over the audience would be less.

You buy these movies, holiday specials, etc because you want to have them to watch whenever it is convenient for you but you never watch them. Then when you are flipping through the channels you will stop and watch one of these movies or shows, even if it's on commercial tv, even if it's halfway through?

I don't think the "nostalgia" will ever diminish....only the idea of what
          nostalgia IS.

Or maybe the adults of the future will just be emotionless robots...I don't
          know.

And all people are not wired the same when it comes to nostalgia anyway...
some are lost without all their little "hookups" to their childhood---
and some people lean more towards growing up and never thinking about
their childhood passions---most likely "out of sight, out of mind"

Personally, I'll never forget that day in highschool when I saw the
new BATMAN toys (action figures) released in a tie-in with the 1989 movie.

It was at that moment I knew how much nostalgia was going to be a
big part of my life (at least the "toy" kind).

I was pining for something that I basically experienced only
5 or 6 short years before---kinda funny when you think about
          it almost two decades later.

Guilty! But sometimes I will flip onto a movie I have and then get out the DVD to watch it.

These days it's all about instant gratification. In some ways, I'll admit it's great, but for many kids growing up today, it's all they've ever experienced, and I'm sure there are negative ramifications to that.

OMG! I can't remember anything else that was as a huge as that Batman movie when it came to tie-in merchandise.
You couldn't go ANYWHERE without being bombarded by stuff. I remember walking through JC Penney's and every rack along the aisles was packed with every kind of clothing they could stick a Batman-related image on.
I still have a couple of those shirts.
This one was my favorite. I dug it out of a box and took a pic to share.

Thanks for posting the pic of your cool shirt.

The "BATMAN T-Shirt explosion of 1989" sticks in my mind too.

Actually the JOKER graphics on those shirts reinforced my love
for the character big time---with Nicholson as the Joker
on the horizon I couldn't have been more geeked out---it was
like a "nerd tidal wave" hitting me!

I still have most of a full case of Topps cards from that movie. Full case of shelf display boxes that held individual wax packs. Unfortunately the box got water damaged and some of the shelf boxes got that moisture warpage look but the cards are undamaged due to the wax packages. I still have the orig box even though its damaged. I took the shelf boxes out though.
I could probably take a couple photos of that stuff if anyone is interested?
In fact I should probably sell a few boxes in the marketplace. I'll never use them all. I already made a few sets from one box and have at least one full set just sitting there.

Yep---something about that movie's premiere for me REALLY says "event".

Well, we have so many choices today that it kind of blunts us. At least that's my take on it. I kind of miss the days when there weren't 40 zillion different cereals to choose from, and you didn't have instant gratification and actually had to wait for TV shows, movies, etc.

Well, here is a look at a 5 year old's point of view: My daughter will watch Peanuts Halloween or Christmas on DVD all year long, but still gets excited when it is on ABC, because that's the version with the commercials. lol.

When it comes to television, I get nostalgic because I really don't like much of what's on there today. I find myself mostly just watching DVDs that I have or reruns of Friends and Seinfeld on the broadcast stations.
                            It's all good!

                              Hmmmm....

Y'know; it's not just the anticipation that I miss.... it's sseing something I didn't expect. Part of the problem I have with movies and tv is that I can usually guess the entire story from the ad. Because most of 'em are really REALLY genericly written. Same thing with visiting the toy store or hobby shop. Oh look, ANOTHER shelf of Batman figures.... Nobody does stuff like the Tomland figures, or the old UFO Commander Seven series; the weird little thing that's not part of a multimedia blitz. (Although that new belt fed, tripod mounted Nerf MG is nifty!) Nothing comes out of left field. Nothing is unexpected.

THAT'S what bothers me so much. That, and the hype.

                              Don C.

It sad when the trailer is the sum of whats good about the movie.
Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
                                Lo they do call me.
