Never understood the appeal of EXILE...it
was too drab for my tastes although it's considered
      one of their greatest achievements.

AFTERMATH is probably their best album IMO.

      The FLOWERS comp is great.

Big fan of SOME GIRLS too.

I'm a huge STONES fan---but not enough to rate their
      albums backwards and forwards.

Man there are a lot of good ones like Flowers, Black and blue (great classics on that one), and Let it Bleed.

It's the "stonesiest" of all Stones records--boozed and coked out, loose and murky and slightly dangerous. It's like all the right parts fell into place (or more appropriately--out of place!). Sure, there are other Stones records with better songs, but Exile has such feel and mood, which for me, these sort of sonic intangibles score huge points in my assessment of recordings......

I understand your review--I've heard simillar takes (obviously).

Some people find shame in being in love with hooky songwriting---
(and/or being ignorant of deeper aspects of music)---not me
              ha

One way that you and I are alike is we both think the Stones
are a killer band overall....because of that there are a lot
less appetizing rock albums (by other bands) to me than EXILE.
