I thought the Earl one was funny, especially when that exact ad ran on the next commercial break. If you're gonna do it at least make fun of yourself for it.

Yes, it's getting more prevalent. Newer technologies such as DVRs have forced advertisers to embed their message into the programming in order for it to be seen. It doesn't bother me, personally.

Remember in the 80's back to the future did it. I guess it's a way for the movie industry to make more money since they don't make enough.

The one that stands out in my memory is Reese's Pieces in E.T.

I don't mind product placement, I consider it a necessary evil, but I do think they went one step too far in the new James Bond. Bond doesn't drink his usual "Martini, shaken not stirred" anymore, but Coke Zero. That's just wrong.

In the book it was actually M&M's, but they thought the movie wouldn't do crap so they pulled their product. You had never heard of Reese's Pieces before that movie. The M&M's were a part of the book because the taste reminded E.T. of the energy pills he took on his ship.

As for product placement, it does not bother me. I would rather see a Pepsi or Coke bottle/can than a can that just reads cola (or even have the label blacked out with tape). I think generic placement takes away from the movie more than the product placement.

"Demolition Man" was one of the biggest placements I had ever seen with "Taco Bell". In the movie, all restaurants were called "Taco Bell" because they won the "Restaurant Wars".

Your so right. There have been some that where bad like in Vegas a couple of years ago. There was a car company and it took away from the story.

It kind of annoys me when they are so blatant about it. Smallville is ridiculous about it. Every shot of Clark driving up in his truck does a close up on the vehicle logo. Pete Ross walks into a room and declares the place needs some Lemon Pledge. Or how about Cloey pulling out a box of Claritan and holding it up for a close up while saying "Claritan Clear". I don't mind subtle nods but this stuff is Bulls@#t. I don't want commercials in my movies/shows.
Another blatant one that comes to mind was one of the Scobby Doo Movies where Shaggy and Scooby are getting out of the limo with Burger King cups displayed prominantly in their hand/paw.

Smallvill seems to be the curent king of product placement.

Ford Motors sponsorship let NBC pick up the abysmally rated (as in Nielsen, 3.3/5 last week) Knight Rider, which prominently features their product. I watched the pilot tele-movie and realized I couldn't endure it on a weakly basis.

30 Rock can do no wrong.

I think the worst in history is Superman 2 with it's Marlboro cigarettes and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I blame Superman each time I butt a cigarette out into a famous bowl.

Every scene in Godzilla 1985 that Raymond Burr was in featured Dr Pepper, when it finally aired on TV, it was sponsored by them and they ran this in the commerical breaks.
