New LOW Long Distance Phone Rates for 1956

Just thumbing through an old Life magazine (March '56) and came across this add for Bell Telephone.

Man, calls were really expensive back then !!!

Wow, and those are the cheap evening and Sunday rates. I'd hate to see the regular rates. Long distance rates have dropped so much (I'm sure that breaking up the Bell monopoly got the ball rolling). 10 years ago, it cost me 80 cents a minute to call Japan. Now we can get a deal where it's 5 cents a minute. Or use the internet and it's free. (I can't even imagine what an international call like that would have cost in 1956, considering the domestic long distance rates shown above!)

We'll just use the transporter then.
Yeah, right after I get me that rocket back-pack that we were supposed to all be using by the year 2000.

Anyone else remember in the 70's that receiving or making a long distance call was a big deal?
