I love the Star Spangled Banner and can embrace all its renditions (except Roseanne Barr, who was bashed for her disgraceful display). Marvin Gaye (RIP) had a wonderful style all his own. And like her or not, you can't deny that Whitney has a helluva voice!

To all insulted by Roseanne's rendition...I see that as unfortnate...
---Roseanne never meant any malice---she's a comedian, and
was prompted both by baseball league officials and her own sense
of self (she IS a comedian after all) to perform the song with
humor----okay---so it turned out more annoying than funny (to most)---
but the way some here are commenting you'd think she
was maliciously corrupting an American icon which isn't true---
...in fact, ROSEANNE herself is an American icon and having
her sing the song in the first place ---well, I don't know what
people were expecting...
I mean she's iconic BECAUSE she's rebellious, annoying and screechy--
-and...most importantly...a comic."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

Sure Hector---be that way....
but remember...Roseanne---had a hugely popular
long running, intelligent TV show, ashow that SHE produced
herself with a fine-toothed comb (so to speak)
... a show that pioneered a new kind of family sitcom dynamic and tone
and won just about every award there was to win in TV at the time...
Roseanne was a (THE) household name for over decade---
(certainly during her "song at the game")
..the WOMAN was an icon and not JUST the show...a hero to millions
of housewives across America...
And just like Jerry Seinfeld Lucille Ball etc. etc. she'll always
hold that place in TV history that she earned....I thnk that's
obvious.
Geez sometimes I don't understand why you post your "challenges"
at me Hec."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

It was one of my favorite shows growing up and I still like it.I just think there's a place and a time for comedy and singing the national anthem isn't one of them.Singing it like most singers do by putting their touches and their style is one thing, but singing it to be annoying so people can laugh(which failed miserably) is another
I'm not trying to justify the quality of Roseanne's "act" with the fact
she is an comic (iconic or otherwise)---just trying to explain her motivations
for reinterpreting the National Anthem (i.e. her vocation's leanings
as opposed to what some percieved as a maliciously mocking thing)---
and, yes, we differ on the "sanctity" of the song as it applies to
reinterpretation---
... but Nationalism works in different ways for different
people---and I can accept that no sweat."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment
