    Aussie Dangers?

Well. . . someone asked me in a PM, if we really have lots of venemous spiders and snakes here in Oz, like they show on TV. I do get asked this every so often by Members here, so thought I would start a thread on it.

The following was my response, but is just from my experience/knowledge. Cat (slipperyLilSuckers) or Will (Sowth) or Robyn (Batgirl), live in different parts of the country and may have a different experience. So correct me and speak up guys about your parts of Oz.

Um. . . I live in the city. . . that said we have a lot of bush land spread around in our cities too. So whilst you don't see alot of venemous snakes and things in the city/suburbs. . . I only have to go to the local park with a creek, or a few minutes walk to some bush land and yeah. . . there will be lots of snakes etc, some venemous.

DO the snakes bother me. . . no. . . snakes are more scared of us than we are of them. . . and they can feel the vibration of us coming a long while before we get there. So 95% of the time they will clear out when they feel you coming.

I remember when I was on a scout camp when I was about 12 years old, waking early in the morning and walking down to the creek. . . .and standing on a red belly black snake. . . . I **** my pants (almost) and ran faster than I had ever run in my life. Cold blooded. . . it wouldn't have been active yet and people can easily outrun snakes, unless they are poised for striking.

Spiders. . . well. . . you might have heard of redbacks. . . they are all over the place.. . .probably have 50 or 100 around my yard/house at times. But they're small and live in corners and under seats. . . opportunistic waiting for things to creep into their webs. . . you would have to be pretty unlucky or stupid to get bit by one... but they are all over the place. I rarely even botther looking for them to kill them.

Sydney they have a bigger venemous spider problem, as they have funnel web spiders and more trap door spiders than we do. It has been known for people to put their shoes on and get a lethal bite, or pulling on clothes from the wardrobe.

Rarely EVER hear of someone dieing from posionous bites. Most that get bitten, recover well from anti-venoms.

It is the Blue ring octopus that lives in the shallows and rock pools, that is the real deadly killer. They are very accessable, quite small and quite aggressive. No antivenom known and you would never make it to a hospital for help anyway - might be dead within a minute or two.

I have never known anyone to die from a spider or snake bite. I got bit by a spider last year on my neck. . . whilst gardening. . . it hurt got infected and I was stressed about it. . .but I lived!

What I just read Made my Skin Crawl. I'm not afraid of spiders in General, but they do Give me the Creepy Crawleys. My Lady is so Afraid of Spiders, and that makes me the Spider Killer in the relationship. I'm now glad I don't go into the water cause I would be Super Freaked if an octopus could take me down.

Of course. . . I have never seen a blue ringed octopus in my life, and never heard of anyone dieing from one. . . recently or in the news that is.

And it isn't likely that you would bump into a poisonous snake just walking from your front door to the car, or to the shop or on your way to school. You have to go looking. That said, you don't have to go very far.

The trap door spiders I thought didn't go as far north as Brisbane where I live, but there were warnings last year, that they were now up here where I live, and to be careful in your yards just after rain. . . .did I see one. . . no. . .still haven't.

About 10 days ago as I was approaching the possums I feed (living in the roller door of the garage at the horse paddock), something made me look down and I found that my foot was about an inch away from stepping on what I thought was a coiled up diamond python. It is quite dark in the garage and my eyes were still adjusting. Turned out to be a carpet python, about 6 feet long, at least.

Here is an example of one...(I had left my phone/camera in the car)

I stepped back, as you would, and decided to feed the possums from the other side of the roller door. As I stretched my hand up, I just happened to notice another one up above me. At that stage, I must admit, I did feel like I was in an Indy movie and urgently looked around to see if there were anymore. (not, phew). The one up at possum level had two big lumps in it, and my heart sank, thinking it was the possums...thankfully it turned out not to be.

I just looked up world's most venomous snakes and found that the top ten are all found in Australia.

        The Ten Most Venomous Snakes

A few days later my sister was telling me how she had waded out at a very shallow beach and felt what she thought was a fish nibbling at her. She looked down to see an octopus wrapped around her legs. She tried to kick it off so quickly she fell backwards in the water...in her clothes...I have to laugh just thinking about it. Her newly arrived American partner discovered he could walk on water as he got the hell out of there :D

        Sydney octopus

David, at least we don't have bird eating spiders as south as Sydney :D

(This is one of several species of large, aggressive spiders, which are found in the warmer and more arid regions of Australia. The largest species may attain a body length of 60mm and a leg span of 160mm, with powerful fangs 10mm long. The colour varies from grey-brown to reddish, often with a silvery sheen. Some species are known as barking or whistling spiders because of the sounds they can produce by rubbing their palps (the appendages between the front legs) along a set of spines at the base of their fangs).

The tourism board is going to be so unhappy with us Dave & Cat!

I've seen a brown snake when climbing in the sand dunes as kid, it was right in front of my face, I just backed away & no worries.

I picked up an old can in the rock pools at Brighton beach and there was a Blue-Ring octopus inside (still makes me jump thinking about it) it crawled out an plopped back into the water while I was holding the can, yikes. A kid at my school was stung once in the same area but lived.

I've been stung by jelly fish twice in Queensland, both times hurt like hell and left huge red welts on my hand / arm that lasted for 6 weeks, not a fun experience.

I've seen so many Hunstmen Spiders (especially on the inside windscreen / dashboard of my car) that I now just squash them with my fist. Average size is probably 10 cm leg tip to leg tip.

Found two Funnelweb spiders in my parents-in-law's pool, they were incredibly aggressive. I got them out tried to push them away with a stick but they both "reared-up" and showed there fangs (I kid you not) so I made them as one with the pavement.

I saw a shark when I was snorkling in Fiji once. Luckily I was already wearing brown board shorts. Probably doesn't count but hey it's all South Pacific!

Book your flights soon guys!!!! :-)

            Will

PS - A friend of mine married a English guy, he's been here for ten years and he still checks his bed everynight before getting in lol.

My cat brought in a brown snake into the house once but it was only a baby. . . .having walked straight up to it before I saw it. . . I did the Macho Aussie guy thing. . . . .squealed like a little girl and ran away as fast as I could! LOL. . . .then got a broom and bashed the scrappy doo out of it.

VERY lucky young guy. I just watched a show on these guys on the science channel the other day. They made it out like the ultimate killing machine.

Yeah big suckers and they are everywhere. They don't make webs and literally are a hunting spider, prowling around. . . but only look for insects and cockeroaches. I hate looking at them but know they are perhaps the one spider you should let live because they help us. . . . .but they are scary looking things so the poor buggers get killed on sight particularly if woman are around.

I once lifted my mattress up to look for something under the bed. . . .and I kid you not. . . there was like 10 massive (4 or 5 inch diameter) huntsmen under the matress. There also these other spiders in that place where I lived that were a similar size, very hairy and jumped rather than ran. . . .fastest spiders I have ever seen in my life and freak me out more than any other I have ever seen because it hops long distances in the blink of an eye. . . .no idea what kinda spiders they were.

Isn't Australia the only place in the world that has more species of venomous snakes than non-venomous ones?

Wow Cat, i think my heart would have stopped right there and then!!!
Do you think you will be going back to feed the possums?(gulp)
A few months ago, my dogs were barking their heads off , so i went out the front to see what was going on, and lo and behold, there was a massive Red Bellied black snake in the yard. The dogs went ballistic, and sorted him out, i was in no position to stop them....
And then there was the other time when i moved the bunny hutch and saw another red belly all coiled up underneath, boy did i move!!!!
But the funniest story is when i heard my ducks quaking like crazy and i went to investigate, and my border collie picked up a trail and started barking like crazy at a tree. On closer inspection, i saw that there was an enormous Goanna perched up in the tree. That sucker was easily4 metres long and the nails on his feet were positvely dragon like. I got out of there in a hurry. Ive never seen one that big that close before. Apparently they can go after you chi ckens (or ducks). So maybe he was eyeing off my duckies????
LAst but not least, there have been times when ive been in the car and a huntsman spider will appear out of nowhere and run along the dash. I of cousre scream wildly while my hubby says, just kill it, hehe.

This is the most interesting read on the boards for me in quite some time...

I've always loved Australia (at least reading about it and watching shows). Hearing about the "wildlife" makes it that much more appealing/fascinating.

So I guess moving Mego Meet to Australasia is canceled

Each area has its own dangers. Here we have Black Widow and Brown Recluse Spiders. Rattle Snakes, Cotton Mouths, and Coper Head Snakes.

Plus we have Tornadoes and Hurricanes.

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?
