I am a big fan of Jay Ward animation, and collect villains from Disney, Jay Ward, Filmation, Hanna Barbera and other studios. Just wondering if anyone else collects these rarities as well. My favorite piece? A pan cel (about 2 feet long) of all 13 characters from the Legion of Doom. Only TEN of these were made (mostly for the animators) and I have number 4 of 10. Simply an amazing piece.

I picked up a few recently but I don't really consider myself an animation collector. I have a Mer-Man cell I posted a while back and couple of She-Ra cells now.You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return... -
yah, the market has been flooded recently with he-man/she-ra/fat albert, etc., on ebay. now is a good time to stock up while they are affordable.Founding member of the Legion of DoomComment

Yes, I've been collecting for over 20 years now. i'm on ebay 5 nights a week checking out the current cel auctions and i get notices from other animation stores of thier sales. I mainly get cels of thing i liked when i was a kid esp. superheroes from the 60's -70's. but i get all kinds now as well. i have 1 dealer who sends me notices whenever she has cute girls from any show avialible. i just got in today a package of 4 cels from an ebay seller. it's a long standing addiction i'm trying to fight."Hang on Lady... We go for a RIDE!" - Shorty to Willie Scott.Best movie line from Indiana Jones & the Temple Of DoomComment

I have 4 original animation cels from Peanuts specials (Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and You're Not Elected Charlie Brown). They include the production sketches. I also have 3 production drawings, and one limited edition cel from Charlie Brown Christmas signed by Bill Melendez.
He just died recently and I imagine I could sell them for a nice profit if I wanted but I'm really not interested right now.
I had a lengthy conversation with an animation art dealer regarding collectibility value of cels in general....he sells everything under the sun from Disney, Super Heroes, etc.
His opinion was very honest....buy the art you love, not as an investment or thinking that it will appreciate in value. He did say he did not think Disney art would ever be worth much (even the original cels) because there are thousands and thousands of them that were needed just for a scene as well as many cartoons. He did think there was a real possibility of original Peanuts art increasing because there aren't many original cels that were released to the public.
Apparently, a lot of complications between Melendez, Schulz, United Artists and splitting of royalties made things difficult. He also said the specials were made using very small budgets so to own a full cel meaning the original background plus the foreground is a real find because there aren't many around. They would use the same background and just change a head shot to make the lips move or whatever. He said he helped with getting cels available for Melendez studios and would go through an entire box of cels only finding maybe 5 out of the box that could sell because the the rest were just heads, feet, etc.
I also didn't know until he told me that there has never been any original artwork offered for sale from Charlie Brown Christmas and The Great Pumpkin and probably never would be so if someone offered any for sale....it isn't real."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

I collect cels/production art only from the Flimation Flash Gordon series. Not to resell, but for my private collection. They only popped up every once in awhile in the past on e-bay, but today quite a few are there every week. Sometimes I find some from Flash Gordon the Greatest Adventure of All movie. That's always a treat.
Adam West- Your animation art dealer friend was right: Collect only the art that you like. IMHO the people who buy stuff because they think it's worth money and can "flip it" for a proffit, really hurt any hobby.

Very cool. I will have to take a picture of my Legion of Doom cel and post it up here. But I need to figure out how to do that first.Founding member of the Legion of DoomComment
