Here in Austin we're getting 20-30,000 refugees from the coasts. The capital city, already at maximum population density, is in danger of filling up beyond capacity. I think the panic is largely unwarranted, spurred by memories of Katrina and the horrifying images that are now seared into our collective consciousness. I lived in Houston for 20 years and weathered numerous hurricanes; this mandatory evacuation is an overreaction and creates more problems thatn it solves. IMO.

Looks like the rest of us will feel some pain from this as well. Here in KY, gas has already jumped from $3.75 a gallon to $4.69 in some places, and it looks like by this afternoon, that will be standard. This is due to all the refineries in the target area being shut down.

I don't know about this. I think it's price gouging. Our prices in the NorthEast are dropping. We average around $3.40 with an average low around $3.37. We have a war between two places in my city and I filled up at $3.25 yesterday. Yes $3.25! The place across the street from them was $3.29. They've been going back and forth for like 3 or 4 days, dropping the price sometimes twice a day, and there are lines at every pump constantly. They've become the talk of the city and are getting a lot of customers, but can't be making much on the profit side. Doesn't matter to me, just keep slashing the price and I'll stop in. I would love to see under $3.00. Never thought it would be possible but after this who knows. Heating oil has been dropping up here as well. Think I'll be filling the tank early this year before the rush. I may even consider locking into a price, which I've never done before.

Geez! Gas has gone from $3.58 to over $5 a gallon almost all at once here. Some places are shutting down to save their gas to see how high the price will go. Unbelievable!

It's been dropping steadily here in Central KY for about a month. We were down to about $3.55 a gal. on average, with some places as low as $3.52. I'm sure it will go back down, but I'm also sure it will be a gradual decline again, which is stupid.

If the refineries suffer damages and loses it could stay this way for a while. Joy.

Hiya TXteach,

I was about to post a good wishes to coastal Tx La folks when I saw your thread. Hunker down. I'm in Elgin and according to the latest from NOAA we seem to have skimmed out of the major wind area, but I am sure we will still have some good action around here and I know a tree will take my power out. Always does out here in the sticks.

To all my fellow Texan friends and La pals; hold tight. It won't be pretty, but it will be over pretty soon. Ike is a big ol' devil, but somehow never seemed to pull the organization off to get up there into cat4 (or even 3). I hope nobody lives in a mobile or trailer as that is what is apt to get most damaged and tossed around. Hunker down and we can share stories and pics after the weekend.

I have family at the house -- windows boarded up and we are all hunkered down. We are prepared for high winds, flooding and no electricity... I have to say this is the worst flooding in Galveston that I have ever seen. The storm surge is going to 16 - 20 feet. Hang tight Bill and Teach, Be safe and see you after the storm.
