I remember a big deal he made when going onto Conan O'Brien he didn't want the 6'4" O'Brien to stand up to greet him since he's such a short little guy and O'Brien would have towered over him LMAO ...

I see that Thomas is conspicuously absent from this thread. I bet it's because his feelings are hurt that someone would say anything bad about his beloved Van Damme.

I like alot of his movies. Dislike alot too. He seems like a real jackass at times but other times seems like a cool dude. Maybe that's part of the whole Hollywood thing. The stuff posted here is hilarious. Buy my pictures! Pretty sad.

Hmmm. I guess he was an idiot before he went to the US.

                        Hmmmm.

Don't see why he attracts all the "haters"

Seems like a typical action film actor trying to make a buck.

I remember liking TIMECOP---don't really know his material all that
                        much though.

I thought his early movies were ok but the last 15 yrs or more have been pretty lame! In fact, most go "straight to DVD", ha ha!

Every time I have seen him in an interview he acts like a total jerk like he's all really into himself. Wasn't he a coke head for awhile? ( Not that there's anything wrong with that! )

I like Hard Target (John Woo's best American film, believe it or not) and Timecop, and Cyborg is fun for a laugh. Anyway, the dude is garnering a paycheck the same as you and me. There are plenty or worse ills in the world than being a self-centered jerk/idiot/short guy!

Because he's a jackass in real life. Time and time again, people who have been around him all say the same thing...he's conceited, arrogant, belligerent, pompous, pretentious, loves snorting blow, and a womanizer (meaning always cheating on his past wives).

That's what happened on that Scores club...he started talking trash to his former bodyguard Chuck Zito (who was sitting on another table)...Zito told him to cool down...Van Damme lunged at him...and Zito knocked him the F out.

Can you now see why he attracts all the haters?

                                He's no Steve McQueen.

A dude can only be at the top of his game if he maintains his coolness. I'm not talking about being a paragon of moral virtue, but you can't stay on top if you are a belligerent, arrogant cad, even if you had talent (and I don't think Van Damme ever did).

Now, I don't hate Van Damme, but I don't see anything about him that makes him remarkable, either. Therefore, it's easy to see why he doesn't sell many tickets anymore. Not much call for a 48 year-old, self-styled action star who could never act and was always perceived as a bit of wratch-bag. Had he developed the characteristics, personality or talent that keep someone on top past what would be perceived as "their prime" instead of getting caught up in his own press and thinking "I'm the great Van Damme", he might have made it for the long-haul, but as it is, he is a caricature.
