Interesting to note that TDK would have had to sell $900 million worth of tickets to match the number of tickets Titanic sold in 1997. I don't know how many tickets Star Wars sold from 1977-1997, but I betcha it was more than both its rivals -- even though it's now in 3rd place, box office totals-wise.Comment

Of course, those past movies, even as recently as Titanic, don't face the same entertainment challenges as movies do today. GWTW didn't go up against TV, at all. There's a few movies in cinema history that stick out as phenomenon. GWTW, Star Wars, Titanic, and The Dark Knight all fit that bill.Comment

Let's not forget to mention the grandaddy of the term "blockbuster" and a film that has become a cultural phenomenon...Spielberg's classic JAWS!!!!!!!!The very first film in history to break the 100 million mark!
Take a look at this trailer...I am actually in this doc and I appear in the trailer amongst my Jaws collection (black Jaws shirt)...the trailer is narrated by original Jaws trailer narrator Percy Rodriguez. You'll probably recognize his voice as he phrases the opening dialogue the same as the original Jaws theatrical trailer.

Going back on-topic though, I LOVED The Dark Knight and I didn't think I would be that fond of it as I'll always love Nicholson's Joker; but man was it a great film! Can't wait for the DVD and I hope it cleans house at the box office and knocks the terrible Titanic from the top spot!Last edited by LOU; Sep 2, '08, 11:32 PM.Comment
