When Collecting Spirals Out of Control

    Hey,
Just celebrated the 12th anniversary of my beginning to collect Mego's yesterday - the first Mego was a loose Kirk bought off of a new site called Ebay. Since then, of course, many years and many thousands of hours and dollars have gone into a pretty good collection (if I do say so myself) that one day WILL make it out of the myriad of cardboard boxes in my walk in closet into a display room of my own making.
At first it was just loose figures from the Star Trek line. Then loose POTA figures. Then finishing off the Wizard of Oz line. All the while, sometimes dabbling in some other lines here and there - 12" Vintage Star Wars figures, Welcome Back Kotter, Fighting Furies. However, these were just sideline collections that occasionally popped up.
Now, however, these other lines have started to become more and more important in my collecting. I guess since I have gotten almost to the point of being 'done' with many of my mego lines, other toys are starting to look interesting. In particular, the 1982-83 Kenner Indiana Jones line has been calling, and, for some reason, the old 11" Bonanza line keeps popping into my head every now and then. In addition, lunchboxes have been creeping into the boxes as well, especially those related to Mego lines I have.
So, what other toy lines outside of Mego have you found and started simply because you were collecting Mego and got sidetracked?

Ha! My entire life right now is Catalogs and Lincoln Monster Dolls.

I have a pile of other lines though, Mattel Battle Star Galactica, Remco SGt Rock, Metal Men...

Hi Chris, Great story and congrats on your 12th anniversary of collecting. That is great to hear from a Veteran (or in your case Veterinarian as well) collectors that have not thrown in the towel and or sold out during the course. That was pretty much how I got started to. Only I have not been at collecting Mego for as long as you have. I was always a big fan of the POTA and had most of the figures (if not all) and playsets as a child. I also of course like the original Star Trek and had those figures and The USS Enterprise and a few other misc. pieces. Once I relived my childhood dreams of having some of my "old toys" back I kind of got caught up in the Super Heroes. Not having read many comic books in my time alot of them are a bit mysterious to me unless they are the commons like Batman and Robin etc. I liked the tv show as a kid and still do not mind watching them to this day. In answer to your question I now find myself kind of wanting to buy the 12" Mego Super Hero stuff. I have had bits and pieces before from collections that I bought trying to obtain the 8" stuff that I really wanted at that time. Now for some reason I am thinking about collecting the 12" Mego line as well. Not a for sure or definite yet, but I am seriously thinking it over. The old metal lunchboxes are cool although I am not going to try and get into to those as I already have too many other collectibles taking up waaay to much space. I think that I could go for building me an Army of LJN SWAT figures. I always like to build up Army's and have multiples like the POTA soldier apes. I seemed drawn to buying those rascals every time I see a nice one at a reasonable price. Anyway...That is my collecting story and I am sticking to it.

My first collecting items were two decks of mini cards 1st Spider-man and the 2nd Hulk.
Purchased back in 2001 I think...I payed way to much for them but they are still displayed in my glass case's along with old Action-men, Mego's, and A-Team figures.
I've had to move some of my toys into the loft...they started to take over in the bedroom...

I think if I had the funds I would buy all the Doctor Who toys I could find.
Most of my money now goes on buying books...I just love reading classic novels.

My list is too long. I'll collect anything superhero (mostly Marvel) related from the 60's and 70's. It's madness!

My collecting has been lacking focus for the last several years. Almost any kind of 70's action figure line seems to be fair game for me these days! And I just can't stop, now lines like Big Jim (including the cool European figures and Mexican Cipsa ones!), Gabriel Lone Ranger, Mattel Battlestar Galactica are calling my name. And that doesn't even include the Mego lines I'm spreading into (I'm currently on a Wizard of Oz kick). I don't think it will ever end!!

                    Hey,
                    . . . And so it begins again. . .
Just won an Indiana Jones Belloq in the robes loose figure on Ebay.
Didn't really want the AFA grading - as a matter of fact, I might end up pulling the sucker out of the case later on. But the price, for what I have seen, was a good one for a complete loose figure that is rare.
So, now the first figure is under my control, I have about 9 auctions I am watching now to try and piece together figures, accessories and the playsets. Ah, the thrill of the hunt.
BTW, I also have Battlestar Galactica loose 3 3/4 figures. I have been trying to get all the figures loose, and then get one figure carded just to display the packaging with the figures. I finished the entire MASH line about a year ago, all except the large playset.

Man, I don't know how to end it even if I wanted to!! This bug has been in me for so long now that I might not make it past the first week of non-collecting. I'll just stay utterly obsessed with my toys.

Actually, it was Mego that got me sidetracked. I've been collecting Kinder surprise toys and Japanese candy toys until I started collecting Mego several months ago. I recently started a collection of Big Jim figures.

Japanese candy toys are fun to collect too. I have tons of Godzilla and robot ones. At least they don't take up much room (which I suppose is why they are popular collectibles in Japan, where space is often at a premium)

Boy, I have been down so many tangents it's not even funny. From B:TAS to Super Powers to Secret Wars to He-Man. A lot of lines I've sold off to try and help me stay focused on Megos. But I still have problems with new lines such as JLU and the DCU figures, which I do collect. I started to collect the Rookies as a direct result from collecting Megos and was going to collect Emergency and SWAT. But I ended up selling what I had a Mego Meet, again, to try and stay focused on Megos. I also have the War Heroes MOC which I want to complete.

I've also wanted to collect MASH and Flash Gordon (which I have 2 of). I really am trying to not collect older toy lines at least until I get my toy room so I have a place to put them.

One of the things I've always wanted to collect were the NFL Action Teammates from the 70's. I have a vivid memory of always wanting them when I would see them in the Sears wishbook. I only have 3 so far and now am thinking of getting out of them as well. I'm so wishy-washy.

There are also non-figure things from my childhood I'm trying to get back.

I admire people who can stay focused on 2-3 lines and never stray.

I started collecting in 1975, and haven't stopped since. I wish I could focus on one or two lines, but I love diversity (vintage SW, some new, Trek, Mego, Action Man, Saint Seiya, Devilman, Furies, Godzilla, Galactica, Matt Mason, Sideshow Bond, Madelman, some LOTR,...)
