So....
I finally got a new computer. My old one has worked for over 12 years, but the last updates to my virus scanner sort of.... did things to it. (It had a hard time changing it's mind. So when you'd fire up a new program it'd take 5 minutes to activate 'cos of all the stuff the virus scanners were doing to it.)
The first thing I noticed is that it's big. EVERYTHING attached to it is big. Oversize scanner, widescreen monitor, big black, featureless tower.... The second thing I noticed is that computers have changed a lot over the last twelve years. There are ports on the back of this thing that I have NO IDEA what they're for. I can't even figger out what the little pictograms represent. (Hooking the speakers up took some trial and error; emphasis on the "error" part.) It took ten minutes to find the "on" switch. (It has THREE of 'em!) It's also very quiet. TOO quiet. I'm sure it's plotting against me....
I got the new monitor a few months back 'cos the old one (15 years old) was starting to spark from the back. The widescreen was cheap (the store had overstocked) but didn't work so good with a 12 year old video card. The new one works really good, and I fixed the distortion I'd get with some imbedded pics. I can set it for insanely tiny resolution too. But I don't. (Any more.... the first time was sort of an accident.)
So now begins the arduous task of reinstalling my software and hardware. Tragicly, she put one of them Motorola FLEX modems on it, so if I ever reformat I'm gonna hafta monkey with it again. (I'll probably pull the US Robotics one out of the old computer. MUCH easier to work with.) On the plus side, I can probably play "The SIMS" again. I love that game!
It came with the "AVG Free" virus scanner, and I'm wondering if I should bother with my old scanners. This one seems pretty thorough. (I use Nortons, ADAware and Search and Destroy normally.) Any of you folks use this one?
I'm gonna attach the scanner today for sure. The software with it scanns at some insane resolutions and I can probably work with them on this system. I scanned a pic at 9000dpi with the old computer. Took three hours, and saved at almost 300MEG. But it didn't pixelate AT ALL when you'd zoom in.
I asked for extra USB2 ports, and she put 6 of 'em on. All over the thing; four in back, two in front. There are also two unlabeled plugs in front. They look like headphone plugs; one orange, one blue. Any idea what they're for? It also has three of what look like larger (double sized) USB ports. Any idea what THOSE are for?
