If they didn't buy them outright, it seems odd for DC to fully integrate them into the DCU. What if Archie decides to cancel the "lease". Then you have huge holes in continuity. Past storylines won't make any sense!

      Oh wait, never mind.

To my understanding Archie has stated upfront that they have absolutely NO plans for these characters as they don't know how to handle them...so apparently as long as DC is willing, they have the rights to use the characters.

I never knew about these characters. Now I have some googling to do.

When I read the title of this post, I was thinking of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica.

Well even if DC didn't buy them outright, it's better than the annual appearance they get in Archie digest. Usually an ad for literacy or something.

I actually got both of those "Archie's Superhero Digests" as a kid, so I was downright hooked on these guys. Didn't mind the Red Circle revival but Impact deviated to much from the originals that I never connected with the characters.

UPDATE: For some reason, the Archie heroes aren't returning as originally planned in "The Brave and the Bold"....they'll instead be a series of specials released during the summer.

Meanwhile JMS is still going to be writing team-ups on "Brave and the Bold" in addition to the Archie specials.

Yeah, I read that and "if" the specials do well, they might get series. Sounds like Dc is backing off expansion plans. The Milestone characters are not being pushed as hard either.

^ I don't think the consumer wants to buy into these "new" additions when DC can't seem to handle their existing characters. Personally, I've never really been into the Milestone characters. I don't think the experiment back in the 90s was that successful that people were crying out for their return. Plus DC was shoe-horning them into the DCU when the initial concept was thier own universe.

I'm guessing the Archie people looked at the DC plans and made them back off from it. Why Archie doesn't just publish themselves, I dunno. Of course, when they have in the past they've managed to make them seem cheap and poorly done, even when they had big-name talent working on them. C'mon, you have Steranko doing covers, Ditko doing art and you can't sell the book? They aren't even worth anything so far as back issue prices! I think a lot of that too, has to do with the fact that Archie never really seperates the two worlds of their comics. They'll reprint hero stuff in the Archie digests, etc., have the Shield show up in an Archie story somewhere, all of which seems to trivialize the creation. Even when they did those great trade paperbacks they managed to do cartoony-looking covers over using a more dynamic illustration. And these ARE very good characters too. The Fly is a special favorite of mine, as is the WEB. Anybody still have any of those really crappy action figures they did in the eighties?

I hadn't heard about the backing off from Brave & the Bold into specials. I must say, I like that idea better though.Wonder if that means B&B the regular series will be cancelled again in favor of the cartoon version...currently DC will be publishing 2 books with basically the same name. Of the two, although the first issue of the cartoon series doesn't hit until next Wednesday, I'm guessing I'll prefer that one. The regular series had some good highlights (the Golden Age team-ups & the Challs), but the last two runs with Raven/Supergirl & GL/Phantom Stranger stunk. Who thought it was a good idea to shoehorn the supernatural PS into an outer-space GL story? Terrible, IMHO. And I did hear that a lot of Strazinski's B&B plans were being shot down by Didio. I read he wanted to do Batman/Swamp Thing but DC has relegated Swampy to the Vertigo titles and refuses to allow crossovers now into the DCU. Didio uses some excuse about he's a Vertigo character now, no longer part of DC? Weird, other heroes have gone over & come back, Phantom Stranger (starring in the current serial) being one, as is Deadman, Jonah Hex, and a few others. Sounds like a load to me, it's not like Vertigo can publish a successful Swamp Thing book anymore. The last couple tries tanked big time.

As for the Milestone characters, with the exception of Static who made it big on TV not in the comics, I can't see how it will be helping the DCU. A lot of these characters were kinda forgettable, and a lot were edgy to that period of time in the late 80S/early 90s, and may not update well?

Seems like a quick fix to Didio's plan to diversify the DCU, and since his plan with the Atom, Blue Beetle, etc. bombed out he's gone this route. Or it could be something to keep the characters in print for trademark/copyright reasons. Same could apply to the Archie heroes.
