And you know what, it's quite a bit better than I remember. I've been waffling on which DVD version to get of this movie, and lo and behold there was one at Wal-Mart for $7.50 (along with all the other Reeve-era movies), so I bit. I was surprised to find it was the extended European cut. Even better. I don't think I've seen this movie since it first hit video a good 23 years ago or so (I had also seen it while in theaters). I was prepared to wince a lot, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Sure, Faye Dunaway is campy and there are plot holes you could drive a truck through, but it really does have the feel of those 3 Salkind Superman films. And Helen Slater did a great job as Supergirl.
I liken it to watching Superman III and thinking, for what it was, it's not bad. Sure they made some odd choices in story direction, but they executed it fairly well once they went in said direction.
It's too bad that cut-up version made it into theaters here and it bombed. After a rough start, they could have done more with the character, and it would have been great to see her and Reeve interact. Oh well...
For $7.50, not bad. And now my kids can watch it whenever.
