Although he’s remembered for his work on Spider-Man, and rightly so, the very first Marvel comic I ever bought was CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE FALCON #141, drawn by Romita. Although his run on the title was brief, his Cap was the one that made me a fan for life. Years later I discovered he had worked on Captain America when the character was revived briefly in the 1950s.
His artistic influence was on nearly everything that made the Marvel Bronze Age so special for me, designing numerous characters and costumes, and providing the art used on so many licensed products.
RIP Jazzy John.
Romita's art was the face of Marvel Comics to the outside world for several decades, and you still see it used today. THE Spider-Man artist for me, hands-down. I love Ditko's quirky, first 30 plus issues, but Romita defined Spider-Man for all time. Also, one of the greatest artists when it came to drawing beautiful, compelling women.
That image of Spider-Man above is primarily what comes to mind when I think of a Romita Spider-man but, yeah, his Spider-Man was literally the backdrop to my childhood...birthday cake, big wheel, curtains, bedsheets, etc, etc.
RIP
