Oh my gawd Never mess with a Jack Kirby design. I could understand if it was some kind of chain mail but.. I'm not liking the pointy bits on the helmet either. Jack will be girating in his grave.

As for the outfit; I don't find it all that different; it's the old one, rendered a bit more realisticly, with that... whatever it is on his limbs. I GUESS it's supposed to be chainmail or scale mail.... I guess.

I wouldn't expect it to last too long; all them little plates are a pain to draw. It'll get shorthanded as deadlines come and go. I'm betting it's ALREADY shorthanded chainmail. (So we're halfway there!)
