I have been trying to find those costumes. I remember one was a two tone brown thing with wings kinda like the 2nd Nightwing costume. Another was very Batman-esque in blue and green and the third was red and yellow with this cape that looked all feathery. I liked the 3rd one quite a bit except for the fact that it had a rocket pack under the cape enabling him to fly. He wore all three during the course of the story, and then goes back to the booties and hot pants by the end. I was like " what was the point exactly?"
Of all the souls I have encountered his was the most...human.

I don't know why it has always appealed to me but 3-Earth 2 Red, yellow, and green outfit! Not sure why! I have always been attracted to that design. Originally it was designed for the Earth One Dick Grayson as a more "grown up" look when he was originally trying to get out of Batman's shadow and for some reason Earth Two Robin adopted it.

For me, this is a no-brainer:

The BEST Robin outfit is the ORIGINAL classic "shorts and pixie boots" outfit.

I'll even explain WHY I feel this way, for anyone that's interested:

In my view, the strongest and most effective version of Robin is as Bob Kane's and Bill Finger's original concept... that of a BOY Wonder... a laughing, swashbuckling, bright as sunshine sidekick to The Batman's grim, morose, virtually silent Dark Knight detective.

The stark contrast between these two characters (both visually and in terms of personality) is what makes their dynamic so interesting.

In my humble opinion, virtually ALL non-comic book media have depicted Robin as a character that is too old for this basic concept.

Burt Ward was great, but he was TOO OLD to play Robin in 1966!
The two actors from the Columbia Pictures Serials of the 1940's... TOO OLD!
Even Loren Lester, the voice of Robin on B:TAS... TOO OLD back in 1992! And of course, the character was presented as a young man of about college age.
And Chris O'Donnel in the two movies he was in? Gimme a break.

Robin should be a BOY of about 12 or 13... maximum. THAT is what the original outfit was designed for. THAT is what Bob Kane and Bill Finger intended. THAT is what works best.

When you have a college-aged guy running around in solo adventures wearing shorts and pixie shoes and bare legs, it just comes off as silly.

I do NOT care for the concept of Robin as the leader of a group.
I do NOT care for the concept of Robin as a solo hero, or with his own sidekick.
I do NOT care for the concept of Robin as a dark, visual imitation of Batman.

Robin's original costume, when utilized within the correct framework of what Bob Kane intended is every bit as timeless and classic as The Batman's outfit.

There is simply nothing like it. It's the perfect combination of bright, childish color, with swashbuckling neatness (love the collar on that cape!), and sidekick vulnerability (Re: lots of exposed skin) that gives our "main" hero someone to worry about and feel protective over.

That outfit was always E-2 Robin's I think...according to "Justice League of America" #92, that costume was designed for E-2 Robin by a friend of his named "Neal Adams"...he let E-1 Robin borrow it during the cross-over when his got ruined. After a few more JLA/JSA team-ups, E-2 Robin began wearing the red and green again, as of "JLA" #135.

#5 is the best, gives him his own identity plus an homage to Batman for an older Robin. For a very young Robin, nothing beats the original.

Earth 2 Robin? definitely #3! I always thought the first design looked like something thrown together or don't call him Robin - Darkwing or something? He doesn't even look like a Robin, more like Robin/Batman frankenstein costume - horrible design in my opinion.

I do like the Alex Ross Kingdom Come Red Robin for 30 something Robin

Hi everyone. I found this thread while lurking around. Thought I would add my 2 cents.

I have had this issue since it came out and it's one of my favorite Batman comics ever. I actually always liked the brown/gold costume. The blue/green was ugly in my opinion but the yellow/red with jet pack was also cool. He fights a guy named "Raven" in the story.

I love the Earth 2 Robin outfit. Always did and one day will make a custom Mego of it.

I like the current Robin outfit alot. I actually designed 3 Robin outfits when the Neal Adams Tim Drake outfit debuted. I didn't care for it much and just for fun designed 3 of my own versions. One of them looks much like the current one.

I quite like the original Nightwing costume too.

Nothing compares to the classic short pants and booties though.

I have to add one more.

I think this version of the Ledy Robin just looks awesome. With a better cape and more mature headsclupt, perhaps like the 9" Mego Robin, it would rock!

This is a tough one to choose being a Robin fan myself.
I will always have sentimental value and appreciation of the original costume with the yellow cape, green shorts and little shoes. I've seen it on the TV series and the various Filmation and Hanna Barbera shows. But for my final decisions, I vote the following:

DICK GRAYSON: The red, green, and yellow costume of Earth 2. I first saw it in
                    Batman #300. Totally awesome.

TIM DRAKE: First costume without a doubt. Dick wore it on Batman: The Animated Series. With the current costume, I do like how the cape is shaped like Batman's and he has gauntlets on his gloves. What I hate though that the color green was removed entirely.

MOVIE: Chris O Donnell's first outfit worn at the tail end of Batman Forever was the best costume in live action.

                    Cheers.

Number 5 for me (Number 6 is good, too) - much sleeker, matches an actual robin's coloring, and compliments Batman's outfit nicely.
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

Thanks good buddy! It's my current desktop image also.

I hope if Alex Ross ever sees my post with the use of his Batman and Robin painting that he's not too upset with me that I took some liberties on his work with Photoshop.

I know he likes to paint The Batman with his eyes visible through the cowl's eye slits, but honestly, I can't stand it! The Batman's eyes should be blank! And a few inches off the bat ears on the cowl were in order.

Also, I wasn't too crazy about the Burt Ward styled utility belt on Robin, so I changed it into the comic book version belt.

Lastly, I guess that the boy model Ross used for Robin was somewhat Asian in appearence, so I made some small adjustments to The Boy Wonder's face as well.

Do you really have to ask? Just look to your left.

Seriously, I love the orignal shorts and booties costume, but it's time is past. I don't want to see DC ever retcon it out of existence though. That should always be Dick's first Robin costume, even though most current colorists nowadays can't remember it's all yellow with no black in flashback scenes.

As for alternate Robin costumes, designs for Dick's costumes appeared in a Batman 100 page spectacular in the mid-70s, and then in that Don Newton-drawn Robin story in Detective (after it merged with Batman Family) in the late 70s. I too dug the brown and gold and red and yellow suits. Their was a Batman Gallery one-shot that showed many of the proposed designs for Tim Drake, and one by Breyfogle does indeed look a LOT like the current Tim Drake suit. I hadn't even thought of that!

A personal, forgotten favorite of mine was Jason Todd's first "Robin" costume from Detective Comics #526. He wore it in that issue, and then a few issues before Dick showed up and gave him the Robin mantle. It had some similar aspects to the cool Earth 2 Costume, but was the first to have the red trunks and green leggings that Tim would have.
