    Hasbroverse

Ten years ago, Hasbro dusted off its ’80s action figure line Transformers and turned it into a blockbuster movie that was so successful it has spawned four sequels and counting.

...about a minute in, and this is how my nostalgia feels after reading this...

The toy industry and the entertainment media have always had a cozy relationship. Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man, etc. are all beloved because the toys were marketed through their own cartoons and comics. So in some ways, this is kind of the next evolutionary step.

But how many times are these executives going to make this same mistake? "GI Joe is a beloved brand that has been tremendously successful for us, so we are going to throw that all out the window and make a completely different movie that is GI Joe in name only." Sigh...

It's the circular logic. They want to exploit the brands because they have long-standing value and at the same time, change the product. Has that ever worked?
