Here's the article...interesting. Personally I think he's spooked taking the job of director because of what happen to Schumacher. Not that he would remotely aim for the tone of story Schumacher made. But the fact the last film, BVS, received such a drubbing from both fans and critics, he may be having second thoughts about placing his directing reputation on the line for this license.

Ooooo, ooooooo-----I know, I know!!!! Let's get Joel Schumacher to direct it!!!!!!sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon. -
It could be a lot of factors but yeah, a bad Batman movie may not help his future projects. I'm also thinking that the studio may be too "handsy" and he may just not want to put his name on it.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

WB wants George Miller.
It looks like Affleck didn't want to direct a heavy action flick, but more of a crime film with action and WB wants more space from Nolan than that.
A Mad Max Batmobile scene = printing money.
The irony is Affleck only got Batman because WB was afraid he would leave after winning for Argo, so they offered him whatever he wanted. Ben wanted Batman, WB said as director, sure. Affleck countered with Star and direct, and they finally gave in. Affleck pushed Batman off his schedule after WB locked in his next projects.
So WB releases Live By Night, it tanks, shaking Ben and WB's confidence, but they have no choice except to move forward on Batman. The guy has never been worth the trouble. Should have gone with Scott Adkins...

Now we have Ben Affleck saying, "It's too hard to direct myself as Batman. I'm going to pass, but help bring someone in who will work with me." Right...
All these projects seem to start out the same way. Warner Bros. embellishes them with all sorts of gravitas in making the announcements and by the time the film is ready to be released, people have quit, stories have changed, and about 30 chefs are in the kitchen over looking the final product. And the end result seems to look about as convoluted as that process. I'm still waiting for them to surprise me.Comment

WB, as all of Time-Warner, has been on the verge of merger/sale for nearly a decade. Once Robniov was released and Legendary left after MOS, every decision has been made in a panic.
Studios are working like sports teams in that they want blue chip rookies so they can pay less than market value for about 3-5 years and assign them their valued projects. The rooks never pass even if it's an ill-fitting gig because their agents tell them it's career suicide. That's how we end up with Tranks FF and Ayers Squad or Tim Miller Deadpool and Gareth Edwards Godzilla. As we see when the first studio project hits, the director takes off as Miller and Edwards have both ditched the franchises that made them bankable.
But when it comes to the huge projects, every studio has one or two trusted guys. For Fox it was Singer, now it's Matt Reeves. For WB, because Nolan has always been a classically eccentric artist, they've wanted to rely on Snyder who had major clout because Legendary and Robinov loved him due to 300, and he was always supposed to be the next Michael Bay. So the guy has been able to hold WB by the bag as their was always a "not a matter of if, but when" belief he'll crush the box office again.
The best solution would have been for WB to take the FOX deal from a few years ago. Supposedly, the plan was to put the Donner's in the Chief Creative/Fiege role as the conflict of interest would have forced them to release the Marvel rights.Comment

I read that Afleck was butting heads with WB about the movie. I think they did not see his vision so he is bailing on directingComment
