A real treat- Superman: The Movie in the theater

I just wanted to share that I had a real treat yesterday in Los Angeles......where the New Beverly Cinema is offering weekend matinees of ALL FOUR of the Christopher Reeve Superman films this month.

It was a decent print of the film, only spotty in one sequence, and it was a thrill seeing it on the screen, my first theater viewing of it since it was a new film. What was really memorable was that the audience was REALLY into it--- cheering at key sequences of superheroics, etc. The theater also showed rare trailers of Superman II, Supergirl and the Kirk Alan Superman Trailer and even one of the Fleischer cartoons before the feature.

That film is masterpiece, IMO. The acting, direction, writing etc...are all just right!!!

I know where I'll be spending my Saturday afternoons this month. If you live in L.A.- this theater is worth checking out! Also I've never seen Superman IV before(it just looks so bad)...but it will be fun to see it in the theater.

Good for you! It's great to see classics as they were meant to be seen.
I love the Reeve films...all four of them. The last two may not be great, but HE is great in them. The Clark/Smallville scenes in Superman III are some of my favorite in the entire series.

Awesome. I'd never lose out on a chance to rewatch those in a theatre again. Glad you got the chance.

Had the pleasure of seeing all the Superman movies at the theater when they each individual premiered...and watching Superman back in 1978...was rivaled only by Star Wars in 1977...and ALIEN in 1979.

Superman II is right up there too...but the first Superman had more impact because it was first, same applies to Empire Strikes Back and Aliens.

Hugely disappointed with Superman III and IV though...but as one of my esteemed posters said, Reeve was still great, no matter how bad those two latter movies were.

I envy you...wish I was in LA right now, I'd definitely go...

What a real treat it would be to see them again.I envy you sir.

I was 9 when Superman came out, and you really can't overestimate the impact it had on me when Superman took to the sky that first time in the Fortress. "You WILL believe a man can fly.."

                Damn straight.

Isn't that thw truth, warts and all? I saw I, II, and IV in the theatres, they were magic. Cavill should wish he was in a film as good as the first one.

So true. I was eleven, and that frisson of seeing Reeve was intense after the limitations of G. Reeves. It's one of the very, very few film I can re-watch and enjoy with a strong sense-memory--burnished now by nostalgia.

One of my favorite little memories of my Grandmother is her trying to psych me up around Christmas '78, and asking "Andy, are you gonna go see Superman?" with a twinkle in her eye. Yep, Gramma. I sure am!

Man, that had to be a great experience! I wish one of the many theaters around here would put it back on the big screen.

I was able to see Superman: The Movie at the local theater last year, the same one where I watched it's local premiere in 1978! The only downer was there was something up with the digital projector at the time, and everyone looked like they had psoriasis. It was still a great, transcendent experience. Still my favorite film of all time.

I've seen both Superman: The Movie and Wrath of Khan somewhere over 20 times and would gladly pay to see either one in the theater again.

I just returned from the Saturday matinee of Superman 2, another treat on the big screen. The crowd was much smaller than last week and more subdued, no cheering. It was still a good show. Before the feature, it was explained that we were viewing theater owner Quentin Tarantino's personal 35 mm copy of Superman 2, an original print from 1981 and that Warner Brothers doesn't even have a working print in its archives. The print we watched was aged, but still very functional and watchable. I still plan on attending next week's screening of Superman 3 and Superman 4 the following week.....
