Much sadness upon hearing of her passage. I know a lot of folks on various "Superman" sites that are easily as shaken by this news as if it were a close member of their family. I had the pleasure of meeting her on two occasions at the "Superman Celebration" in Metropolis, Illinois. She was a very friendly, caring and sweet woman and her absence will be felt both by those who've known her from Superman and those who've had a chance to spend a fair amount a time with her. She was a grand lady from an era of acting quickly fading away. Rest in Peace, Noel, you've earned your place in the heavens. Condolences to her family, friends and fans...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
The First Lady of Metropolis. I'll always remember our brief encounter with her. Our son Andrew was just a toddler on one of our trips to Metropolis, IL, and the Superman Celebration. We were looking around the Superman Museum, when Ms. Neil walked in. I pointed her out to Cindy, but decided to play it cool, and not disturb her while she was "off duty" so to speak. But she came to US, and made over Andrew, and said "Hello little one!" and had a nice conversation with him. She was just as nice as her smile indicated.
Sad, I had no idea until now. She was on my mind last night as I was painting a George Reeves head. Although I never really connected with the Adventures of Superman as a kid, I've always considered her the iconic Lois Lane.
I met her briefly in Metropolis once as well, when she stepped in to say hello at one of the evening screenings of old Adventures of Superman episodes. It was a pleasure, and I'm sorry to hear there'll be no more chances fpr people to meet her and share in her experience.
If memory serves me right she was the first on screen Lois Lane, Superman and the Spider Lady serial chapter,
then came Phillis Coates after in Superman vs Atom Man (Lex Luthor) and Adventures of Superman season 1-2
as far as I am concerned Noel was the one and only Lois Lane, then and now, RIP Noel.
^Noel was Lois in both serials, and then Coates took over for Superman and the Mole Men and the first season of Adventures of Superman. When the second season was ordered a year later, Coates was unavailable, so Noel put the pillbox hat on, and played Lois throughout the rest of the series.
One other Superman credit that is left out of every obit I've seen; she played Lois' Mom on the Lorne Michaels-produced 50th anniversary special in 1988. So she was essentially reprising her role from Superman: The Movie!

Phyllis Coates was a much better Lois. I think the Superman community conscious will back me on that.
However Noel Neill was a very good replacement. I preferred Meriwether to Newmar as Catwoman just like some will lean towards Neill because she is a softer Lois and played her longer. I think Lois should be feisty and sometimes have a stronger presence over Superman.
Anyways, the Adventures of Superman is as American as baseball and Apple pie. Just remember film is permanent Noel's performance will be enjoyed for many years down the road. Everytime someone new gets on a Superman kick and digs deep into the archives Noel and Coates will be there.

Oh man I need a refresher course on AOS, Coates did only play Lois in season one and in the Mole Man movie
Noel replaced her in season 2 and the rest of the series, and played Lois in both serials, I have all of this on dvd,
feel free to telepathically send me a dope slap and thank you.
