Anyone going to see Legend of Tarzan?

Since we're on the topic this week, I thought I would throw in this film. Early sampling from critics is not good, but surprisingly the top critics like it better than the standard ones (38% to 27%) which is not anything to brag about in that cellar but there is a good margin separating the two. I'm taking the wife to see it in IMAX. I love the pulp heroes, so any chance I get to revisit those characters I give those projects a shot since critical assessment can be so heavily skewed. I don't anticipate a young critic getting jazzed for a movie about a jungle hero. I really loved Greystoke with Christopher Lambert and apparently there is a prop designer who was involved in both Greystoke and this new production who says this feels very much like a lose sequel to those events. That sounds interesting to me since a full-on origin story was not something I was hoping to get again. So I'm going in with a very basic expectation and nothing too OTT. Trailers look pretty good, although I have to say the film feels over produced. The Spiderman-like swinging and CGI apes don't give me a feeling of a real jungle environment, but we'll see if the IMAX effect lends something to the intended visual here. Obviously the producers felt they had to compete on some level with the modern superhero action sequences. We'll see. But I'm giving it a shot this weekend and I'll post a spoiler-free review when we get back.

It's getting solid and enthusiastic reviews in the ERB communities online. I'm thinking part of the problen with the mainstream reviewers is they're expecting the Tarzan they know, and this movie's giving us for the first time the Tarzan of the books.

(You know, the one who can beat Conan )

As much as I love the character, I feel like I've been burned a couple of times this summer already (I'm looking at you Warcraft and Independence Day). I'm waiting to see what you guys think.

As long as Samuel L. Jackson doesn't try to recruit Tarzan into the Avengers,it's all good.

I'll definitely see it. I love the character and just read the original Burroughs novel.

If it's a Tarzan closer to ERB's original concept than any previous movie version, I'm in.

If that's the case then count me in on seeing it too.
