To be fair, this wasn't really Superman. It was New 52 Superman, who more or less wasn't the "real" Superman and DC went to great efforts to stress that. And he was largely disliked. So killing him was more or less a "service" to fans, while still giving a story some "impact". This isn't a "world without Superman", it was more or less, "Oh hey, the imposter is dead, here comes the real deal"!

I'd say I was a bit shocked that Superman's death in the movie didn't resonate more, but 1 it was a "spoiler" so no one could openly talk about it and 2, it was done in such a ham fisted way in a really bad movie, that no one could care anyway.

^Yeah, the death in the film wasn't earned, plus, Snyder and co. went out of their way to make us NOT root for Superman, despite Cavill being a charming guy. And then they give us the ending so we don't even have time to really consider him dead either.

The New 52 Superman's death was definitely a mercy killing. It's DC acknowledging they have no idea what to do with the character, so they've given us the last popular version (Post-Crisis), written by his most popular creator (Jurgens).
