One HUGE regret I have was turning down the opportunity to visit his studio during the first TCAF. I knew he was a Batman Beyond artist, and Batman: Ego had come out (Which was a great book), but that was about it at that point. He did hang out in Dragon Lady (which was close to his studio) before his move to Halifax.

I'll be rereading some of his work today, celebrating his wonderful style and storytelling. It's a terrible loss.

He must have had a Winter place in Florida because the last time I was in Emerald City, his autograph was everywhere. The clerk said to me "He comes in all the time".

          Mano' man.

I thought Future Quest would be his perfect vehicle to seemlessly crossover a comic series and cartoon. No one has really done it correctly yet because the comic source is usually too complicated. But the HB slate and Darwyn were perfect for this.

I'm glad his has his recognition. He deserves to be in that special conversation of real artistic use of the medium.

Sad news. Another legend and great talent lost. I always really liked Darwyn's artwork because it always had a great throwback feel to me, clean and simple without being childish and cartoonish. His gifts and contributions to the comics world, and the artistic community in general, will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Darwyn. Condolences to your family, friends and fans worldwide.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Looks like he was a snowbird... a nice article in CBC with an outpouring of kind words about him as a person (not just as an artist)

I equate the loss of Darwyn Cooke to 3 others that you basically wake up and say "What The F??!!??" The three others were Dave Stevens, Mark Gruenwald, and Mike Wieringo. Soooooo young and you didn't hear anything literally until the day they passed that they had anything wrong with them. I am speechless. I will say this...his style definitely was one that made you want to read the book. It drew you in to look further into the book. I think the best way to describe his art was Animation meets classic art from the 50's/60's. One of my regrets is that I only met 1 of the 4 that I mentioned and that was Mark Gruenwald. Never got to meet Darwyn...but I think he would have left the same impression that his art made on me...Fun. RIP Darwyn.

And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
                The beauty that surrounds them
                Isn't it a pity".

He effortlessly took the most classic and primal versions of the characters and made them seem fresh and vital again. We need more comic creators like that, not less.

                  RIP.

Here's a couple interviews with Cooke that are worth watching if you enjoyed his work. I've been reading comics for more than 40 years and I'm not sure if there is a series I bought off the stands that I enjoyed more than New Frontier.

The best panel discussion I've ever had the pleasure of attending with Cooke, was a TCAF screening of Stanley Kubrick's The Killing at the Bloor cinema a couple of years ago. It was essentially a discussion between Ed Brubaker who was working on Criminal at the time, and Cooke who was working on Parker, about the crime genre.

As usual, Chris, you put it so well. I can think of no better eulogy for a comics creator.

I bet that was great. I've not read their Catwoman series. I need to rectify that.

And thank you for posting the interviews, MMarva, and the tribute, Sam. I feel somewhat broken up today about Cooke's passing. I'd be lying if it wasn't at least partially for selfish reasons, but his insight and talent are sorely missed by many fans and should be by an industry.
