Director James Wan promises Aquaman will be more "fun"...

Mmm, looks like the directors of the stand alone JL members' movies are sort of having a little mutiny on the Znyder ship already....

“The kind of filmmaker that I am, even my darker horror films are still very fun. And I think that’s important for me and the kinds of films I make. The film I’m here to present, ‘Lights Out,’ is a fun horror film. And I think Aquaman is a character who has… y’know, been made fun of a lot over the years, and I think it’s kind of fun to show a really different, cool, badass side to this character – but at the same time, let’s not forget to have fun with it.” -James Wan-.

Definitely sounds like he's addressing the backlash. The funny thing is, there was already a backlash after MoS. The fact that Snyder and Co. didn't REALLY address the overall complaints on the tone of the first film is a real head scratcher.

Thoughts? I think it's a good statement. But humor is a fine line in these films. Marvel hits it well. But a film like The Shadow was really undercut by some inappropriate humor.

That said, I don't think Arthur should take himself as seriously as, say, Namor. especially since he should be able to meet deprecation and humor with some whup-azz.

Momoa strikes me as a likable actor, I'd like to see a bit of mirth, just not too much. He's not Ant Man.

An Aquatic action-adventure film hasn't been done in the super hero genre. I hope they can let it be fun if they try to make it look like mad Max we will get another Waterworld.

I was thinking about Waterworld, too. Yikes. Supposedly in the cinematic DCU, Atlantis is surfaced.

Aquaman is that sort of multi-genre comic--sci-fi, sword & sorcery, ecological vigilantism--that will need deft handling IMO.

He is likable. Def. not my first choice, but capable. The "savage" Aquaman look is off-putting to me, but at least he's not maimed.

I'd love to see Arthur and Mera use their powers fully in a film.

I like Momoa quite a bit and thought he was a great Conan (just didn't have much to work with, kind of like Brandon Routh in Superman Returns), but I still picture Aquaman as a Sam Jones-ish sort. Maybe they should have had a blonde like Alexander Skarsgård play Arthur and Momoa play Tarzan.

My guess is that one reaction like that over a DC property (MOS) wasn't enough to course correct a creative team foolishly attempting to satiate the outdated whims of Batman fans and mainstream movie-going fearfuls from over a decade ago.

                    Hey WB, wake up!

Your job of drawing into the theatre the wary "mainstream comic book hero trepidatous" types and satiating the hardcore comic book nerds who needed darker film interpretations of their heroes to hide their unfortunate shame is a job way over in 2016.

Get on it, for a more appropriate DCCU!
