CBC visits a comic con in 1974

And encounters incredible comics and questionable haircuts.

In 1974, a pair of art students at Toronto's York University, a hobbyist publisher, and an artist who was also a hardcore comics fan organized a comic book convention called Cosmicon.

Pretty positive i met my wife in that same room 19 years later.

That was wonderful. Thank you for that.

Love the dude in the corner smoking, and the lack of toys and other merchandise. Just 4 color purity.

I was wrong, that was Winters college, not my old home base. They all had that same 70s vibe when I attended there.

What a great story! Thanks for posting Brian. I hope that guy with the first issue of Superman held off selling. That beautiful specimen will pay him incredible amounts today. And to think a good copy of that was selling for only $40.00 in the mid 60's? Amazing. Of course $40 was a good chunk of change in the 60's but still peanuts compared to something deemed a collectable. This story really shows the attitudes of comics and the general license back in the day. I had a good chuckle at the plot outline for the Freak Friends. One has to wonder if that wasn't inspired by Ralph Bakshi.

If you can get a copy of Ironman #72. There is some good satire on what comic cons were like back then.

That was cool. Guess they didn't have long boxes back then?
