    Variant Cover question...

I just posted this on The Art Of George Perez facebook page:

Just picked up the George Perez Hellcat variant today and thought when I was picking it up that $12 was a lot of $$$ for a book that the interior art is just awful. But I pick up ANYTHING by the Master...even if it is just a cover he's done. Much to my surprise the variant cover is going for some crazy $$$ on ebay. It will never leave my collection...I was just taken aback by how much the variant was going for.

My question to fellow collectors...would you buy a variant just because your favorite artist drew the cover even if the interior art of the book is bad and is a book that you can't see yourself reading or collecting? I am not a fan of variant covers and have 2 in my collection that I can remember. This one and a Neal Adams variant on Mystery In Space I think. Other than that...if I am fortunate to run into one I like at cover or just a little above cover I might pick it up. This is the most I've ever spent on a variant EVER. And it's the last time I will spend that kind of money on a variant.

BTW...this is the variant cover I got today:

"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
    The beauty that surrounds them
    Isn't it a pity".

    - "Isn't It A Pity"
    By George Harrison

Yes, I do buy variant covers based on the artist... That Perez cover is great.I was hoping to find one at a decent price. I won't spend a lot though, but looking at eBay $12 was a steal. It's iconic enough to hold value, and I would try to get Perez to sign it at a con.

I used to, but know that I get my comics through comixology and I have noticed that they include them. If it is an artist I like I do try and save the cover if I can find it online. This does save me money.

Never have been a big fan of the variant cover scam, and even less enamored of it if it's attached to a book with subpar writing and/or artwork. HOWEVER, I've loved the character of the Hellcat ever since she was just "The Cat" way back in November of 1972 and this cover is gorgeous, so, yeah, I likely would probably buy it just to get that Perez take on Hellcat. At least the suits at MARVEL Corporate or Disney (or whomever is responsible for the atrocious costume changes to both Ms. Marvel and Spider-Woman) haven't gotten to Hellcat---yet.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
