I thought I was DONE...Marvel pulled me back in

With a little from an old friend. Met an old friend on Black Friday at a comic store. Found out he's doing interviews and other contributions for a comic book site called Talking Comics:

    http://talkingcomicbooks.com/

I've known Bob Reyer for about the last 30+ years. Not only is his comic knowledge top notch...but I wouldn't have gotten into a lot of the music I love if it weren't for his even stronger knowledge of music. I know that he loves doing these interviews and spreading his knowledge to others that are just getting into reading comics.

Anyway, we start talking and I was telling him I can't get back into any of the new stuff that either company is putting out. Then I start looking at some of the books in the new section and come across the new Thor number 1. Open it up and I have to say that I am a visual person and the art struck me as really well done. Bob tells me I should pick it up and that it's one of the better titles Marvel is doing. I proceed to another rack and see Dr. Strange 1 and 2 and see that Chris Bachalo is the artist. OK...I'm hooked. Not ready to buy....just hooked. Bob tells me it's a really fun read and I comment that Bachalo's art needs to fit the story/writing. He tells me I should really pick it up. OK...At first I see number 1 is $5. Bob tells me it's only on Marvel's number 1's and that it's regular priced after that.

Just finished reading 1 and 2 and I've been pulled back into at least 1 title. Dr. Strange was really good. Who would've thunk that Marvel could put more story telling back into a comic book. It's not just crappy full page scenes with absolutely no dialog. I've always loved the Dr. Strange character. As long as this team is doing the series...I'm all in.

Next up will be the Thor number 1 that was suggested. So far my friend is batting 1.000. In 30 + years he's never steered me wrong.

Post note...he also mentioned the Silver Surfer by Mike Allred. Gotta find those too.

I know what you mean I have been dragged back to a large comic book bill again with the new marvel titles while they last that is, beginning to feel sorry I went to getting my stuff from comixology now as I seem to be getting back issues as well

I really love both titles... the common element is writer Jason Aaron. He's also done a terrific job writing Star Wars, Wolverine, X-Men, Punisher, Ghost Rider, and my personal favourite a Vertigo crime title called Scalped.

He's really made Jane Foster and incredibly sympathetic and terrific character as she struggles with the burden of Thor. A real throwback to the original premise that many of the original Marvel superheroes have ailments that they overcome (i.e. DD is blind, Don Blake limps, Tony's heart condition, Dr Strange has the shakes etc.)

Berto, if you do enjoy this new Thor #1, I suggest you pick up the previous series, Thor God of Thunder, which sets up this current series.

I will get to the Thor 1 hopefully soon.

On a side note...Went to another comic shop out here on LI and was browsing and came across Dark Horse's Joe Golem Occult Detective. Art struck me first and then I saw that Mignola was the writer. Picked it up and thoroughly enjoyed the 1st issue.

This is the first time in a long time that I am actually excited and can't wait for new books to come out. I know it's only 2 books...but these were both very enjoyable and fun reads.

^^^It's a beautiful thing. My (likely over-enthusiastic) take on the new Bats Vs. Supes trailer is kinda the equivalent as far as superhero movies go.

There's a lot to be said about palpable excitement in this "adult-nerd" field when you've been jaded/"put off" so many times.

Many posters here are unaware of that jaded feeling because they can revel in just about anything related to their nerd-genre of choice---I know that (like me) you aren't one of those people.

I hope you know I'm sincere when I say I'm happy for you---and, admittedly, some of that's because your excited "field-report" also buoyed me in a personal way. This is because although comics are far from my "geekdom of choice"---they are still the source material for a huge percentage of what I'm into. And, altho' I've accepted print is deader than disco--and with it comicbook media on the whole---I still hold out hope that within newer superhero comicbooks, the "old guard" (such as yourself) can still find something to get revved-up excited about---somewhere.

Keep buying and they'll keep making...and, better yet, maybe they'll hone in on their audience and start to bend more towards you, then them leaving you stranded with largely sub-par material.

Again, I have hope that they will. And your post has increased that hope.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

Joe Golem is based on this novel from Mignola and Golden

Its pretty good pulp novel sort of style. I liked Baltimore better, tho.

Uh Oh...Marvel just pulled me into another title. Just happen to be in Amok Toys and they also carry comics. Pass by Marvel's latest version(s) of Spider-Man. Whimsical cover of a book called Spidey. The old Spidey Super Stories logo...so I pick it up just to see what's going on. Mind you I am NOT a Spider-Man fan. Closest I ever came to collecting Spider-Man back in the late 70's Early 80's was Marvel Team-Up which I think I'm only missing 2 or 3 issues. I liked the cover of the book and open it up to see that the art is like a combo of McFarlane/Campbell/Bacchalo. Heck, I'll pick up the first 2 issues and see it it is worth it. Wise arse Peter Parker...I love it. Very fun read for the first two issues. One thing I think is very comforting is that there is, what I've seen of the new Marvel books, a lot of writing/dialog going on. Makes for a good read. Another one to add to the monthly pickups.
