Oh man. One of my heroes. Responsible for not only TONS of great comic work, but also much of the artwork on licensing in the 60s and 70s, most famously the Ideal Captain Action and Super Queens packaging.

    RIP.

Murphy Anderson was one of the best, if not THE best inkers in the business. Those issues of Hawkman and Adam Strange are beautiful. I met him and his wife long ago at a con. He was wearing a three piece suit and was so professional, but so nice to talk with. At the time he was involved with the PS magazine for the Army and talked about taking it over for Will Eisner. I had him sign a Buck Rogers comic he'd done and he was happy to talk about Buck.
A few years later we met again, this time he was with Curt Swan and Julie Scwartz...talk about a lineup of talent!
I think my favorite of his work is the first Zatanna issue of Hawkman, #4 ? His women always looked so fresh and pretty.
Oh, let's not forget The Atomic Knights...class stuff!

Just saw this on Facebook and my heart just dropped. So sad. I can say I had the very great pleasure in meeting Murphy once in all my years of going to cons. That meeting is the main reason I tell everyone that is into comics to go up to a creator/artist/writer and let them know how much their creations mean to them and to thank them for all that they have done. Not only a GREAT inker and artist but also ahead of his time. I didn't know until recently that Murphy had his own company that used to do pre-press for comic books. All the stuff I used to do when I was in pre-press printing. Four Color proofing so that covers and interior art can be mocked up before they go to press. I understand that we all get older...but it just sucks that some never truly got the recognition that they deserved. THE Hawkman artist. Thank you for bringing that character and many others to life like you did. With a heavy heart...RIP Murphy Anderson.

And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
          The beauty that surrounds them
          Isn't it a pity".

Anderson was on a panel I attended at a con, and he was so humble and gracious talking about his work and the work of other artists he embellished. A real gentleman and so talented. He worked on so many awesome DC covers in the 50s and 60s not to mention interiors and the licensing work.

This is the first comic I remember owning. Didn't have any idea who the creators were at the time but that eventually changed.
I was lucky enough to have both Murphy Anderson and Juilus Schwartz autograph it.

I'm aware of his talent but it's good to read what a gentleman he was. R.I.P.
