Most super-hero movies break down upon repeat viewings. To me Superman: The Movie is the gold standard for super hero flicks, but a lot of that is nostalgia. If I wanted to nit-pick it to death or just beat it up with a tough critique, I could, but I have such warm feelings about it from seeing it as a kid that I don't want to look at it that way.
Man of Steel has a lot of issues but my biggest gripe is just the overall bleak tone. A little more joy in the movie might have sold a whole lot more tickets.Leave a comment:

Yup, I think we can all agree that's where Superman Returns jumped the shark.Leave a comment:

I really liked Superman Returns for what it wanted to be, but the kid subplot killed it for me.Leave a comment:

agree on all counts but I still like the movie for what it is and it is light years better than Superman ReturnsLeave a comment:

Good for you, Hector. I can't disagree with anything you've pointed out. Too many people are inflexible in their opinions, myself included. To admit you've changed your mind is... Super.Leave a comment:

I could berate you for this post and say I toldya so, but I've heard many express the same feeling about the Dark Knight trilogy.
We're always entitled to change our minds; sometimes we want a favorite character to succeed so badly we put on beer goggles for media adaptations.
That said, Captain America: The First Avenger will always be a great film for me, likewise Reeve's first Superman film.Leave a comment:

I've changed my opinion on Man of Steel...now I don't like it so much...
Seen it several times...and with each viewing, it keeps losing more and more points.
The main gripe?
Why does Zod and the rest of the Kryptonians want to change Earth into Krypton? I don't get it. They prefer to be ordinary beings? I would think having superpowers and rule the Earth like gods would be much more appealing. They would get to fly, lift tons, not go through diseases, etc. but noooooooo, they want to live like humans, be vulnerable like them, get cancer, etc...pretty silly if you ask me.
Superman's hairy chest and five o clock shadow, yes, I'm going there, lol. The dude sure made a scruffy looking Supes...chest hairs showing in the suit's neckline, not very Superman like. And what was up with his five o clock shadow? Supes is supposed to be clean cut...just look at all the past Superman protagonists.
Amy Adams. I'm sorry, but I'm not down with Lois Lane sporting a Pinnochio nose, yes, I went there too, lol.
The S emblem meaning peace in Kryptonian, please...lol.
The destruction of the city, thousands dying. Supes could've lured Zod to a fight in the middle of the ocean...at least try...did no such thing. When they take the fight into orbit...they conveniently land on almost the exact place in the city...and no matter where they crashed and ended up...Lois Lane was right there on cue, conveniently with perpetual ring side seats, lol.
Superman, prior to snapping Zod's neck. I'm sorry, but Zod could've easily blasted that family with his heat vision...no need to turn the neck to aim...eyes alone should've done the job.
At the very end, just when Supes flies off...and the female soldiers says, "he's kinda hot", ugh, okay...
Henry Cavill himself...while ruggedly handsome, and does have that chiseled Superman face, and is indeed ripped...he's sadly sort of, well, kinda short for Superman. When he's kissing Lois Lane, they are almost the same height.
The Kevin Costner/Pa Kent tornado scene, well, you all know how silly that was, no need to go into further detail, let's just say it was lame, lame, and lame...
I also didn't like the "Dune" look of the planet Krypton itself...what a depressing place...kinda glad it exploded, lol...
Anyway...just some gripes, ha...
Now excuse me, while I watch Christopher Reeve's Supes...now that is MY Superman...
