The only way this cycle of "killing" heroes will end is when people quit buying into the concept. These series, for whatever reason, make lots of money even though most readers understand it's just a formula for making a quick buck and their heroes will return. I guess some people NEED to miss their heroes to rekindle that love and they believe these contrived stories are the only way to achieve that feeling.

we are all marks. we know what's coming and still we play along. for a while DC actually left heroes dead.
it's funny after the 1st crisis I kept waiting for Barry to come back from the dead and to Dc's credit they left him dead. every once in a while a story would flash back (and they had me hook line and sinker on the ar in flash 74-79 when Prof Zoom thought he was Barry)
They let Jason todd stay dead for a whole 10 years (and really why was it even necessary to come bring him back from the dead in any form)
Even the original supergirl they left dead for a while

but ever since the death of superman death is just a gimmick again. What next Al pratt and Charles Mcnider back from the dead (we already got Rex Tyler) Why not Kathy Kane. I wasn't buynig batman before this isn't going to get me to come back now. I learned my lesson with superman. wait for a reboot and then buy again

              >You all should become Spider-man fans

              You all should read "DeathNote"....

              >Nostalgia is the only way recycling of ideas works, and no one has nostalgia for crap like "Knightfall".

You're VERY true; but I think you've got to remember the process continues ENDLESSLY. So; scary but true, you're EVENTUALLY gonna have people nostalgic for "Knightfall."

              >It's just another case of another writer thinking that they can "revitalize" a character by placing a costume on their own pet creation.

I think another part of the problem is that, since the 90's you've got a LOT of writers and articts who got into comics for the money. "Image made tons of loot, I can do the same...." So they really don't CARE about the books they're doing, and they'll do whatever pays the most. (Despite any of that "I've always been a fan" hooey you get in the interviews.) Even into the 80's most comic book people didn't make huge salaries. (Except maybe the top guys.)

Yup. I've come to the conclusion there is very little in current comics I'm enjoying. Luckily the big two are now reprinting tons of material in affordable volumes, so I can go back to Earth-1 (or Earth-2) and enjoy.

I agree. and it's really too bad because there has been some modern stuff that was actually great and is as good as the stuff Denny and Neal (and later Aparo) did in the 70's (like Kingdom come and New frontier) just not enough in the long run monthy books

                      >I've come to the conclusion there is very little in current comics I'm enjoying.

You guys are doing it again. "Comic Book" does NOT equal "Marvel and/or DC." There are lots of OTHER comics out there. Don't be afriad to try something NEW. (And by "new" I DON'T mean "non-Marvel or DC superhero.") The bookstore has tons of comics from Britain, Japan, France, Italy.... all translated into English. Try some of those. There are tons of collections of old American newspaper action strips. Independant publishers are still out there; and most put out trades reprinting their entire runs; so you can jump in at any point. You want action, and suspense, and character, and depth.... try something like "Golgo 13" or "DeathNote." (Which I'm always pushing for a reason.) Pick up some issues of "Command Review" which collect the "Erma Felna" stories from Albedo. Fantagraphics has collections of the old Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and L'il Abner strips. THOSE are all pretty good. I've heard that "Kriminal" has been translated into English. I'd also recommend the Fleetway 2000AD colections. Judge Dredd, Robo-Hunter, the ABC Warriors, Nemesis the Warlock.... You'll recognize most of the writers and artists; I think they've all worked on Batman at some point. "Usagi Yojimbo" (which is an American comic) has been going for almost 25 years; and it's lasted that long for a reason. And if you're not afraid to paw through the back issues you can get stuff like "Area 88," or "Grimjack" or "American Flagg." Check out the visual arts section of the library; you'll be AMAZED at how much you find there.

Seriously; there is SO MUCH out there these days that I find it heartbreaking (and not a little baffling) when I hear folks say "comics suck now" just 'cos Batman is doing the "Bruce Wayne retires" schtick AGAIN. Guess what? They've been doing it FOREVER! How many "I.... I QUIT!!!!" stories did DC do since the 40s? I think every second Batman issue from the early 70s featured that one. Sure, they weren't overhyped events; but they were essentially the same story. (Although back in the day they had the sense to make it a one or two issue thing.... and not a 50 issue "mini" series like they do now.) That's why I think the problem ISN'T the books. It's the fans. The new Marvel and DC stories really aren't any worse than the old ones; but now you've been around the block a few times and can see what's coming. So it doesn't do it for you any more.

You've got some great points there. For me, it's not a case of recognizing where some of these storylines are going; it's a case of being ****ed that they would ever go there in the first place. There's a big difference to me between some campy silver age superhero retirement confined to an issue or two, and the mega crossover drivel they push on us now. X-men and Spider-man have completely lost me, and DC is a mess too. I want good stories for my favorite characters. I'm not willing to roll the dice on companies and characters that may not last. $40 for ten or twelve issues of something that may disappear any month is better spent on back issues. It's a vicious cycle.

Same here. I won't deny I am a super hero mark. I know there are many, MANY fine non-SH comics out there, but I just don't care much for them. That's my hang-up, not any comment on the quality of the work.

When I was a kid reading comics in the 70's, there was a strong foundation with all of the characters. You had continuity with ONE time line and each writer placed their own nitch in THAT storyline. You felt like you were growing up with the characters. These days they get killed off and reconceptualized so often, there is no longer a character to miss. Is there any surprise that when heroes are interpretated to film, the storylines and general appearance of both hero and villian come from that golden age? A good story remains eternal and unfortunately todays market only serves to rehash what has already been done. When the writers run out of re-hashing, they kill them off and start over. There's no longer a character to embrass.

You know, just can't work myself up over this.

                                Steve Rogers will be back.
                                Bruce Wayne will be back.

                                Anyone killed will be back.

                                It's a matter of time.

All it takes is a comic fan reading this today, becoming a comic writer of tomorrow saying to himself, "I've got an original idea... I'm gonna bring back... [whoever]...from the grave!"

We've already seen it with Jason Todd and Bucky with the writers of today who were fans yesterday. It will happen again. We just need to ignore it and wait for it.
