There isn't a level or circle of hell made for John Byrne but I sure hope that
if there is a christian god, one day he will get his. The fact that he can't get
a job at DC or Marvel today certainly points that there is at least, some karmic
    entity in the world.

    Sorry, end of rant.

As for the topic, having been an artist ( with an art degree to go with it)
yes, in the Country of Capitalism, you should get paid for what you sell.
You should also stand by your word as a man.

Now I've heard everything I want to know about John Byrne. I thought he was a jerk just from his rants online...but that is just lower than low. Well...cross him off my list of artists I was wanting to meet.

Mid Ohio Con 1994 - I took a break from our tables to go exploring and to see how bad the lines were for autographs. Turns out it was only twelve or so people ahead of me. They had a table where it was John Byrne, Mike Mignola and a third person I'll never remember. Anyway I got Byrne to sign my copy of Iron Fist and then he remarked that I didn't have anything I my hand for Mignola to sign and made that a point of conversation. He said hey look, here's another guy who doesn't know who you are! I was only vaguely aware but it didn't need to be broadcast. He's a piece of work but his artwork defined my teen years. I have conflicting feelings towards him. I certainly would not seek out anything further from him, though.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

well, 3 things would have worked against me I'm sure:

1.it was 1994, I was all of 24 then. Much more a hothead ( and not as ...thoughtful as I am now),
so that would have been bad.

            2. I was in a comic shop in Edmond Oklahoma. You may not know much about Edmond, but being a
minority in Edmond during the 90's and getting into trouble would NOT have been good.

            3. The guy offering the cash wasn't the issue...it was Byrne and his greedy ***** that was at fault.

Incidentally, the day before, they taped the following interview for the local Fox Affiliate...

Smart enough to know that a re-contexted quote can't be considered "out of context".

I don't mind a spirited discussion, so, feel free to bristle at wrongly-perceived manipulation of your post via me, and feel free to insult me.

But, it's the avoiding of the issue at hand that perplexes me.

Regardless of your knee-jerk brush-off, my original point, the idea that: You can't dictate somebody else's monetary "needs"---it still stands.

I think I brought this up before, but it bears repeating. I didn't have any problem with Byrne myself at a Mid-Ohio Con (I can't remember the year...1998, I think). He signed my copies of Superman/Batman: Generations among other things and was polite enough.

BUT, while I was in a LONG line for Mark Waid's autograph, there was a very upset lady behind me who got very loud. It seems she had taken a book for Mr. Byrne to sign, and he refused to do it, saying he didn't work on that book. Although I don't remember the comic, Byrne DID indeed pencil not only the cover (with his signature printed on it) but the interior as well. Way up at the front of the line, Mark Waid loudly utters "Does someone else have a crazy John Byrne story?"
