Are you happy with Ulton's movie design?

The more I see of his face, the less I like it. I don't feel it translates well into toy form either. It's much too human-looking IMO.

My biggest gripe? Why the hell does he need teeth?!

I think the comic design is stronger. But, we haven't seen the movie yet, so on screen, it may work far better.

I don't feel that toy really captures the movie version terribly well. It looks like a robotized Jimmy Durante. I expect him to break out into a verse from Frosty the Snowman before suggesting destruction to the Avengers.

^Thanks Tom. Now I cannot un-see it. I spent $22 on a robot Jimmy Durante. Thanks a lot.

And after he beats the crap out of the Avengers, he turns to the audience and says "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are."

Looks like a Terminator reject to me.
Once again, people wanting to mess with a classic design that works well, just to be "different".

Agreed! Look at the Hot Toys one...that looks like what we've seen in the trailers.

I agree, doesn't need teeth and why does a robot need to move his mouth anyhow?

I think there's several versions of Ultron in the movie, so I'm content in knowing I'll like a couple of them.

There's two groups to blame, the agents and the VFX artists.

It's the same issue as to "why does X take his mask off so often"; the agents demand it on behalf of the clients. In the case of mo-cap, it's so the actor can see their performance in the playback monitors that WETA created during Kong/Avatar productions. One one hand it's a useful barometer to feel the performance, on the other, it's ego. Some actors feel very dejected if they don't see themselves under the effects, and that goes all the way back to Lugosi passing on Frankenstein.

As for the VFX artists, since we're living during the high times of mo-cap the curtain hasn't been pulled back yet. But the trick is VFX studios do not create new builds for each production. In essence, they take what exists from previous productions and insert the new mo-cap shoot. And that has a retroactive effect on the original design because it creates a mold-box as to what can be done. The art designers literally tailor to the build, not vice versa. That's why Ang Lee's Hulk looked like Shrek. ILM was using DWA modeling as the groundwork.

There is an absurdity to the design evolution from Iron Man to Ultron to Vision. Vision should look more like Ultron's mo-cap and Ultron should be more practical like the IM suit. I'm guessing they wanted to avoid the Terminator comparisons and let Spader emote more clearly.

If I had designed Ultron I would have gone with a completely static face...Ultron's eyes and mouth would illuminate only when he spoke...I think that would have been super creepy.

Sorry buddy. I took one look at him and that image just resonated in my head. Hit the button and it says, "YOU have a very Merry Christmas too!"

As if you can't tell if he's powered up or not unless he speaks. That would be pretty cool. Sort of mummy.
