One of the greatest series and adventure characters ever created. And decades overdue for an appropriate movie or animated treatment.

No one can write like Philip Jose Farmer. That book is genius!

Yeah, but typical of Farmer, he never finished the #%& series.

I've never liked "Doc in modern day" stories. Really disliked the early 90s DC series.

Doc had a short Marvel run in you guessed it, the "bronze" age.

I love Doc Savage! The original pulp stories more than the comic books. Some of the comic book stuff isn't too bad. I saw the movie during its theatrical run. My older sister and I were practically the only people there. I enjoyed the movie despite its flaws. I knew the character before seeing the film but that's what got me seriously interested in the Man of Bronze.

The original stories hold up quite well as entertaining adventures. I'd love to a big budget movie faithful to the characters and concepts but I don't have much hope for it. I think the cost of doing it right and as a period piece would be potentially too expensive. Not long ago a director who's name escapes me was developing a Doc Savage film.. He expressed an interest in Chris Hemsworth as Doc. I haven't heard anything more about it for some time.

I was happy when Warner Bros re-released the movie onto DVD and now available on youtube:

Sadly Warner Brothers didn't do anything more than just slap the movie on a disc. There is no remastering/restoration and it's only available as part of their manufactured on demand DVD series. Criticism aside I'm glad I bought it and I enjoy watching it. I just watched it again a few months ago.

As an aside, there was talk of a Doc Savage movie in the '60s with Chuck Connors in the role. It was intended to be an adaptation of "The Thousand Headed Man". Legal and rights issues prevented the movie from being produced. Gold Key did publish a comic version though. "The Phantom City" was also supposedly considered for the story.
