    Vintage Super Hero Chlldren's Books

Cindy and I discuss some of our favorite vintage children's books featuring Super Heroes, including Batman: From Alfred to Zowie, the Super Dictionary, and two of Marvel's Big Looker books on the latest Super Mates!

The Super Dictionary is one of the greatest books of all time! I still have mine (and learn new words with it!).

In hindsight, we may have been a bit harsh on the Super Dictionary. I didn't have the childhood nostalgia I had for the other books, so my adult cynicism colored my interpretation more. There are some odd things in that book, for sure, but I would have eaten it up with a spoon back in my younger years.

Love the cover art on that Fantastic Four: The Island of Danger! book.

The art on those is just gorgeous. Marie Severin and Earl Norem...what's not to love? The FF and Spidey look iconic, yet real in those books.

I bought the Super Dictionary at a comic con a few years back and it does bring back memories. I just bought the updated version for my nephew:

^Yep, we briefly hit on that new version. Dani got a copy for Christmas.

My kids learned their ABCs with that same Batman your girl is reading. They loved it and used to ask to read it all the time.

Yep, my kids did too! After taking that picture, Dani asked me to read it to her again, even though she can read it now!

Batman and Robin: From Alfred to Zowie! was one of the first books I picked up off eBay. Tom Gill did really nice art on that.

                        Those are pretty cool.
About the only non comic book super hero publications I had as a kid were the Big Little Books of Spidey, FF, Hulk, Batman and Superman, which were great.
