^You'd think that...but I kind of doubt it. Every step they've made to "fixing" their problems have looked that way, and then they pull the rug out from under us. See the aforementioned Infinite Crisis.
Every promo piece I read makes this sound like a disaster. The main writer is some dude who wrote for White Collar or something. How does that happen? Is that what moving to LA is going to mean for DC's future? Average fanboys TV writers get to re-shape the entire DCU? Good gawd.
I get not wanting Millar, Bendis, Morrison...those guys have great ideas, weak execution. But a project this scale needs Busiek and/or Waid.
All I had to read is they're creating some kind of "son of Brainiac" I tapped out.
This "event" was supposedly created to fill a scheduling gap that would occur during DC/Warners moving the rest of their offices from New York to California. I'd guess it's back to status quo after that (with the exception of Justice League 3000, which appears to be set in Post-Crisis, Pre-New 52 continuity with the inclusion of Blue Beetle, Booster, Fire and Ice from Giffen's JLI run).
Would be interesting to see if this ties is somehow to Multiversity.
I don't think this is a reboot or a casting out of the New52 continuity as some in the comic media are speculating to drive hits and discussion on social media. If you read the quotes from DC, they aren't insinuating that at all.
It's an event devised to let editorial get their legs under them following the move to LA. The regular teams on the books aren't involved. They aren't going to let a newcomer or an old-timer come in for two months and dictate where Snyder is supposed to pick up with his ongoing Batman story or Johns with Superman and the JLA. It's filler using out-of-continuity versions of DC characters. Until Didio and Lee are pushed out or demoted, I think we're stuck with the NeW52. They've got too much invested in their universe to just cast it aside.
Like others have mentioned, I have a feeling this could be a blood bath much like Flashpoint or even the original crisis, with old favorites being treated pretty crappy. Or maybe not.
I just hope some of it is good. If they do a JSA book, or the Charleton or Fawcett's characters or pre crisis Superman, Or satellite era JLA as one of the tie-in comics, I'll probably buy them. Len Wein and Marv Wolfman are writing are writing tie-in books. They might or might not be good. Supposedly Tim Truman is either doing Hawkworld or Jonah Hex, either of those I'd be in for.
If some of the tie-ins sell really well, maybe DC would publish some throwback titles, but I think most people who would enjoy such books would be too jaded - with good reason - to try them out.
A lot of discussion about this event is going on ...
Too many questions still abound to form a full opinion. Because this is just a stop gap event for the move to the west coast it seems to be designed to tell a bunch of two parters that are barely related to each other. This leaves things so open in terms of having an impact on the entire line. We looking at a whack of "Elseworlds" stories? We looking at a Flashpoint/Crisis like event that will restart things?
One point against the reboot theory is that this happens in April for two months. So June, July and August would be regular issues/regular continuity with a reboot in the traditional September? Unlikely. Could they move reboot month from September to June? Maybe.
My gut is telling me this is a one off that won't affect things in the regular books.
Right now Didio and Lee have told creators to come up with "Blue Sky" concepts for their titles. Kinda like the Batgirl new direction. Basically, try to replicate the Hawkeye success over at Marvel. That book didn't feature Hawkeye in costumed adventures and had a more stylized art direction. And it worked. But given the fact that they didn't renumber Batgirl kinda looks like this "Blue Sky" revamp could come without a full reboot?
Too many questions ...
As far as buying into this Convergence in April I will probably preorder the main weekly book but then I'll pick and choose which two parters I'll get. Definitely not getting them all. So far the pre-JLA Justice Society book will be good. I'll grab the Atom set since he really hasn't been in the New 52 (Ray Palmer in Frankenstein doesn't count at The Atom).
Now Marvel is announcing that Everything Ends ...
At the very least it will be an interesting Spring/Summer.
Sounds like it's a lot like the "Retro Active" stunt...fills the gap, makes us old farts happy (briefly), and gives some old creators paychecks so the company doesn't look bad. That stunt was done to fill the gap while creators geared up for the New 52, as I recall.
