Yeah, even in the old comics, when I found out Peter's parents were secret agents, it just felt way out of place. Peter's dad being a scientist that gets caught up in a big conspiracy makes a bit more sense, but it's still kind of "been there, done that".

I'm hoping it's not clones, but a Chameleon/Mysterio type of thing instead. (remember when everyone was speculating that Bruce Campbell's cameos would all lead to a Mysterio reveal?)

The Ultimate Clone Saga played better than the 616 Ben Reilly story, but at the end of the day, it was a HUGE all encompassing crutch that never really went anywhere in the Ultimate storyline either. It was kind of an excuse to introduce Spider-Woman Jessica Drew as a female clone of Spider-man, his Dad as an aged clone of Peter, even Gwen Stacy was brought back as a clone thingy (yet again) with the odd twist that she was also Carnage.

I agree. That was too much plotting which does more to dilute the Parker character than offer dimension. I also don't care for the "Oscorp as Shield" mimic, where everything super-powered is somehow weaved through their labs. It's too lazy in terms of story structure. At the end of this installment, we already know they are responsible for the Rhino, Doc Ock, and the Vulture which minimizes all of those villains as corporate stooges. Too neat and too shallow in scripting.

I'm hoping they'll follow the storyline set forth by the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, where Adrian Toomes' Vulture wings were still designed by him, and the technology stolen by Oscorp, driving Toomes to seek revenge, and Otto Octavius is an Oscorp employee, but still the inventor of the tentacles, who suffers the same accident that fuses the arms to his body.
