He looks like Vandal Savage to me.
Of all the souls I have encountered his was the most...human.

Aquaman is one of my top favorite superheroes... and ever since the "Aquaman is useless" jokes wore out their welcome a few years into Super Friends nostalgia in the early 2000s, I've been impressed with how he's been handled in many respects. I believe there shouldn't be any kind of hesitation in making Aquaman the "most impressive" that he can be: intimidating and essentially powerful, a worthy opponent for anyone in the DCU. I also see him as the B&TB cartoon saw him---egotistical----and how the Timmverse saw him---irritated by what he sees as freewheeling land-dwellers.

I just saw X-Men: DOFP, and I think WB/DCU are going to have a hard time "out-Flashing" The Flash in the cinematic DCU, due to the cleverly rendered Quicksilver film portrayal.

That said, with Mormoa cast as Aquaman, DC/WB now has the right actor to POTENTIALLY out-Namor any potential Namor portrayal. I like the darker-skinned exotic look and the intimidation approach for (what appears to be) an actor with solid acting chops playing Aquaman. Yes, it's always possible that this Aquaman could go belly up as far as passing for a good version of the character---BUT, I entirely like what I've seen up to this point as far as the casting.

          Full speed ahead, old chum!

I like this choice surprisingly. He doesn't fit the traditional mold but he's not that far off either. He'll bring an imposing presence to the character that a king should have. The big question I have about this is his name. How to you put the DCU in a grounded as possible reality and still call someone Aquaman with a straight face? He'll probably introduce himself as Arthur and some lame reporter will give him the name. Or maybe they don't use it at all and everything is implied. I do like the off-model casting here, though. Watching this entire process we see many opportunities for the train derailment. It's WB so they get no benefit of doubt and have earned every bit of skepticism we heap upon them. However, it's looking like they are putting together some impressive puzzle pieces. Lets just hope they have a master plan to finish the puzzle.

^I don't understand your reservation about names. However "realistic" these "super-hero" movies may be, how is "Aquaman" less plausible than "Super-man", "Bat-man", "Spider-man", "Iron-man", etc. As you suggest, there's always some clever way of establishing the moniker.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I just can't see him bursting out of the ocean with a sea chariot pulled by orca whales proclaiming himself as Aquaman. They worked in the Superman name towards the end, and it made sense since all we see is a big S on his chest. Gotta mean something. It seems he'd be offended at the name given to him by the surface dwellers. I'm probably wat over thinking it. I just hope they can pull all of this together. The DCU should be the source for endless films, but this next one will decide their future. It's all riding on Supes vs. Bats.

Correction, orcas are dolphins, not whales.

You have a point on the superhero name-calling. You are so right how they handled the name "Superman" in the Man of Steel.

In Dark Knight...it was a bit different, but same intention...as Batman is referred to as "THE Batman"...the "THE" is intended to make it adult and grownup...as opposed to coming across as corny and geeky with the stand alone "Batman" monicker.

This my surprise some, but I like Momoa as Aquaman. I for one never did understand how a group of Atlantians could be a race of white people. You look at people that live on the ocean 24/7, they are not white they are tanned. Unless I missed something that the Atlantians are tied to the Norse. Even where Atlantis is supposed to be from, every other culture is tanned. Momoa is from Hawaii and has that surfer god body and complex.

Um, Atlanteans (excepting Aquaman occasionally) are deeply underwater all the time--being tanned would seem to be moot, regardless of their skin tone. Especially after thousands of years of submerged culture. Half of DC's Atlanteans are mer-people, and all have been depicted in varied ways.

I used Nordic to describe Arthur's general look, not his heritage--his blond hair, as with Aqualad's purple eyes, has been specifically worked into his origin.

It's worth remembering that Arthur is half-Atlantean--this can influence depictions I guess, as well as his character. Again, I don't dislike Momoa, I just don't really see him as my Aquaman. Admittedly, I'm a traditionalist.

I think this pretty much guarnatees the Savage Atleantean king Arthur look (the question for me is hook at the beginning or after the big battle at the end) not traditional style costume for Aquaman

Filming is scheduled to take place on October 19, 2013 at East Los Angeles College to shoot a football game between Gotham City University and rival Metropolis State University.

                                It was this or Manhunter.

DC is really trying to separate JLA from Avengers and the quickest looks to be diversify the cast.

So he won't be blond, but that whitish. I'm really curious if he's going to keep the dreadlocks. Then you're looking at a Curry who was an Islander somewhere in the world. Personally, I tie it in to Easter Isle and the Rapa Nui.
