I also dislike the changes they made to Cap in the New 52.
In fact, I didn't like any of the ill-conceived changes to the iconic DC characters.

No he doesn't...as far as action stars are concerned...in terms of being a natural...he's better than Stallone, Arnold, Norris, Van Damne, Vin Diesel...all of them...the Rock is a better actor. He's also a personable on-screen actor. Perhaps that's not saying much...but it's good enough for me, lol. Having said that...Arnold made the best movies...well...Stallone's Rocky and Rambo movies are great too.

I don't mind the name change to Shazam...I'm sure they are going to tweak his Batson to superhero change...they have to...can't be saying Shazam and zapping back and forth all the time, lol. Captain Marvel's name belongs to Marvel...and not you or I can do anything about it...and forget the idea of perhaps Marvel selling it to DC...not gonna happen...so forget about it. Besides....thanks to Superman...Captain Marvel/Shazam exists in the first place, lol.

          Understandable.

Personally? I think the idea that a child can be a "Superman" type hero is the primary thing that the character possesses that an audience can connect with. (So, I think it's ironically disturbing that Cap was derailed by a bunch of DC's lawyers and has never fully recovered to the point of the character getting his due in modern pop culture, and exponentially MORE ironic that DC now owns the character)

The cool thing about DC's animated offerings is that they are quite prolific and more good than bad. I loved Cap's short a few years back co-starring Superman---and I don't see why they couldn't go totally "period piece" as they did with their New Frontier JLA movie a few years back. I'm always uncomfortable with favorite DCU characters being stuck in different time periods in spite of me knowing that it really doesn't matter WHERE the character is, as long as I enjoy the piece.

As chintzy as this sounds, I will always have a huge amount of affection for Billy Batson due to his character (as "Shazam") being heavily promoted in my most formative years (1975-1980). On THAT note, as much as I will enjoy seeing the more modernized version of Batson up on the big screen in live-action, I'd surely love seeing a Beck inspired period piece movie made in the DCAU series.

But, dang I wish they'd get to an animated solo Aquaman film first! Ever since they made (what I saw as) a great Wonder Woman offering, I've always wanted the same treatment for Aquaman, then Captain Marvel/Shazam second.

DC is perfectly able to call Captain Marvel exactly such, just not as a comic title or in indicia. It's a compromise; doubtless they are tired of treading this line & have taken the easy way out of simply resorting to using Shazam!

Make no mistake: Shazam is the wizard's name & an exclamation of magic. Captain Marvel is the hero.

And yes, we all know Superman's success spurred the creation of Cap. Years of circuitous litigation aside, it's obvious (at least to me) that he's novel & unique on several levels. He outsold Superman and inspired tons of merchandise. I'm grateful for DC "rescuing" the character but let's be honest: But for the vagaries of licensing, litigation, & marketing, we might be discussing Doc Savage & the Shadow, or Capt. Marvel & Mr. Terrific, than Superman & Batman here.

^^ DC "rescued" the character of Cap after they ran him into the ground with the lawsuits.

^Absolutely--hence the quotes. Hue has mentioned the irony.

DC does deserve credit for rescuing the character from obscurity and for keeping his classic elements intact on Earth-S.

And I loved "Power of Shazam!" as an updating of the mythos post-Crisis.
