The Ten Worst Give Away Comics

Topless Robot - The 10 Worst Freebie Comic Books of All Time

Lots missing on this one, I used to have one called "Super Shamu" which was at one time a Superhero tv show for Indian Reservations. It was made by Marvel!

I got one at the movies a couple years ago with Storm and some other X-Men reminding me not to smoke.
There was the anti-drug Teen Titans comic. I don't know if it was actually a give-away, but it featured Speedy(of course) carrying a child on the cover.

Those were actually good. Marv Wolfman wrote all of them, and George Perez drew the first one (I think Ross Andru did the other two). The only downer on those is the use of "The Protector" since Robin couldn't be used by original sponsor Keebler. He was currently featured on Nabisco's Super Heroes cookies, which oddly enough had box art by...George Perez!!! Oh, and they made Starfire's costume more...modest.

I have a giveaway comic around here somewhere with Spider-Man, Storm and Luke Cage. It's fairly recent.

And then there's the Spider-Man Aim Toothpaste Giveaways...battles Green Goblin in the first one and Dr. Octopus in the second. And yeah, I have 'em both.

As one who has done a few of these comics I must say "dont always blame the creative team if they are crap!!!!"

9 times out of 10, these style of comics are run through more focus groups and scrutinized heavily by usually several different legal, marketing, and advertising departments than you can shake a stick at. By the time these...decidely un-comics savvy--folks are done, you have crap.

We did one for a huge, world reknowned local event a couple of years ago now, and after coming up with a phenomenal story that featured previously undocumented (and very cool!) events surrounding the very first "event", we were told the book had to feature their current superstar, someone going to the midway and buying something from one of the kiosks, and the "events" advances in breeding and genetics must be featured...and all that in a set amount of pages!

All of this is the kind of stuff every kid loves to see in a comic right?

The book was set to become an annual event in and of itself, but I was cringing a bit about this as the nutjob marketing guy who was our main contact with the "event" people wanted the next book to feature HIM as some kind of superhero cowboy who saves the event!!! Luckily, the "event" people figured out what kind of nut this guy truly was and booted him. Unlucky for us, the new person was told to avoid doing anything nutboy did, killing our annual comic.

Dont get me wrong, it was an honor to be able to do this book, but I would feel much better if it was something great, instead of something we were forced to do....As do many of the creators of the books mentioned here!

The teen titan book, was a giveaway from Nancy Regan. I think I still have the envelope the book came in with the return address of The First Lady on it.
