Untold Legend of the Batman & Legend of Wonder Woman
Untold Legend of the Batman & Legend of Wonder Woman
Cindy and discuss these two favorite mini-series on the latest episodes of Super Mates. These helped form our love for all things Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively.
^Yep! I actually had the Tor paperback first, having seen the ads for the mini-series, but never finding it around here. We go into more detail on the different formats of this mini-series in the episode.
When reading the series, I didn't really notice the switch from Byrne to Aparo on the pencils in the second issue. At that time both Aparo and Byrne had a lot of Adams influence in their art. It's still one of my favorite mini series so many years later. I loved when comics like this told a story but also walked the reader through the history of the character. X-Men 138 during Jean's funeral, Action Comics 500 with Superman giving a tour through the Superman museum, and there was a Green Lantern issue just before 200, maybe 197 that went through Hal's career up to that point.
It was a great way to catch kids or readers up on the history of the characters, but still tell a story. It also allowed for some cool art with splashes and montages. In that Green Lantern issue, Staton mimicked Gil Kane and Neal Adams' art when it dealt with the stories they drew.
^Yeah, DC really seemed to be cataloging their history in the very late 70s, early 80s, as mentioned in the show. New fans-turned-writers were dusting these stories off and touching upon them, without changing them (much). Flash #300 is another one of these types of comics. I think it's one reason I have such an appreciation for the characters' histories beyond my own "Golden Age" with them.
I loved the untold legend of the Batman series, especially with the cover depicting the 3 villains! I've never seen the Wonder Woman one.And now, I must search for that.
