Ideally, the consummate Fortress Of Solitude is everything the Bat Cave is--- but ten times cooler...no pun intended.

Before we give Siegel, Shuster, Lee. or Kirby too much credit, let's remember that the Fortress of Solitude (literally) and the FF's Baxter Building were rip-offs of Doc Savage's two headquarters. Yes, two--he's that awesome.

How much do you think the Batcave was influenced by The Shadow's Sanctum?

The Batcave was lifted from Fairbank's Mark of Zorro. He had a cave beneath his house that served as a stable for his horse and even had a shrub hidden entrance. That was 1920.

I did not know that--thanks.. I recall one of the Zorro series having a cave HQ.

The TV Green Hornet's apartment/garage mesmerized me as a kid. Perfect urban HQ IMO.

I can give credit to any (or all) earlier versions used in different characters' worlds. My point was merely towards the "bigger is better" slant---if you believe in that type of philosophy

I like the Silver Age Fortress (and the one in All Star Superman) better than the movie one, which was more style than substance.

To me, the coolest HQ is the Justice League Watchtower.
