Wow, I hadn't even heard of this series before.sigpic
The event where the fans are separated from the true fans. -
Didn't remember the book lasting that long. Now I gotta see if I can find some of the issues I am missing. I probably have up to the Vess issue you posted...#34. Back then I bought anything Vess did. Great series when it started...sort of Marvels return to the formats like Strange Tales/Tales To Astonish/Tales Of Suspense. Multiple stories in one book. Also took advantage of the new paper that was being used in the industry to print comics. Great artists and great storylines. Don't think it will ever happen again. Too much $$$ lost if you make a book with 2 totally different storylines and characters."When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".

I had a few of those, specifically the Black Widow George perez cover. If memory serves, didn't these have some cool pin-ups in the back of each issue? Like everyone, the glossy paper really sold it for me.I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.Comment

I've collectedca few issues, the Perez three part Black Widow story, Gil Kane's Jungle Book adaption, Cockrum's Skywolf, the Vess Warriors Three, John Buscema's Silver Surfer. It's a pick & choose title for me, lots of good stuff, also lots of filler, great packaging though.Comment

At it's best, it was great for giving creators a venue to experiment with a high quality format that allowed for techniques and storytelling that regular four colour newsprint was not able to replicate. At it's worst, it was a dumping ground for unpublished inventory stories.
my personal favourite issue... a Mutant Massacre tie in by David Mazzucchelli (sp?)
I had never seen comic book art like Ken Steacy's before, and it blew my mind.

I never had any Marvel Fanfare, but I've read a lot about them. Many of them were inventory stories, like the Black Widow tale. I think it was scheduled for Marvel Premiere at one time in the late 70s, and that series was cancelled. When Marvel finally published it, Perez was exclusive to DC, hence the last cover by Art Adams (one of his first gigs, as I recall).
I remember seeing the title listed in Bullpen Bulletins and wondering what Marvel FaFNare was. Hey, I was like 7 so cut me some slack!

Unless kids had access to direct market titles, they would not have been able to read Marvel Fanfare (or Doctor Who, or Epic Tltles other than Groo and Elfquest, BID).
I discovered it when I first walked into Silver Snail in downtown Toronto as a kid, and then was able to buy it when a chain of mall hobby stores in suburbia started carrying direct market titles.
On a monthly grind, it really was hit or miss, but in the back issue bins, I consider it a treasure trove if you can cherry pick 'em for the good stuff.Comment

Cool - that Byrne Hulk issues looks like a hidden gem!
about 15 years ago a friend of mine (he owns the greatest private collection of comics of anyone I know of) strongly urged me to purchase copies of Marvel Fanfare early issues in great shape when I found them, because he thought they'd eventually be highly collectable. Why? Because they're cheap and could only go up in price - they have key marvel figures by great artists, and they're they were influential - the first ever prestige format comics.
I was always skeptical of this - mind you. Seemed like too many issues floating around, and nobody I knew ever seemed to care about them. He was a little older than me, so I think a lot of his recommendation was also based on the fact that he still remembered the hype about them when they came out originally. I imagine that he has a small pile of long boxes of these in storage someplace. So far (as far as I know) the 3 minty copies of the first 3 issues that I bought aren't worth spit - as far as I know. It's one of the very few times I ever bought books with future price prospecting in mind - but at least I only paid pennies for them!Comment

^At least those first 3 issue had great Michael Golden art, if I remember correctly. The series was spotty as Ed and others pointed out, but the colors and slick paper made it one of the prettiest packages on the stand.
But for my money the direct versions of Teen Titans, Legion and independents like Miracle Man, Dynamo Joe, Jon Sable, Grimjack, Nexus and the Badger were better buys around the same time.
The 80s was a great time to read comics.Comment
