That rumor, if true sounds really bad. Not to mention stolen right from The Doom Patrol.

They did it 30 years ago. Not really much of a change, just an ambiguity whether or not Reed did it on purpose or accident. It's been returned to every now and then since in various forms.

Sigh...can't we have heroes who DON'T have some dark motivation? Reed's arrogance and need to go into space first gives him enough guilt and angst without making him a sociopath.

I could go for an FF v X-men movie. I really like Fox's two FF movies and the only time I was really into the FF was when those movies were out. I was getting the current FF comic and got a bunch of the Byrne back issues.

Fox uses the comics as story 'inspiration' but they don't follow the comics exactly (obviously). I'd say they will ignore any alternate reality backstory and just use the comic series as a framework for their story.

Marvel's ongoing 40 year strategy: If you can't make it work, add some X-Men. So, this is faithful to their comics.

seems like First Class demonstrated that a period superhero movie could work, it would work for the FF even better.

I think the problem is that the FF's origin is mired in the cold war space-race. Not really very compelling or relatable to those who have grown up with the spirit of international co-operation in space for the past couple of decades.

I'm sure it can be easily updated, with the conceit of Reed's hubris as the catalyst. Particularly as the "mirror" of Victor Von Doom's own failed experiments that caused his origin.

I'd say this particular issue was a huge catalyst in that Guest Star marketing strategy... the thing is, it works. all through the eighties and nineties sales did increase when you added Wolverine or Punisher or whomever that hot character of the moment was.... Even today with Deadpool. Sad to say, if it didn't work, they wouldn't keep doing it.

Witness Wolverine as a member of every single team in the Marvel Universe currently. Or Iron Man as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy as they ramp up for their big blockbuster movie.

then go ahead and set it in the early to late 60's so the origin still works. Cast some really young actors for that part, fast forward to the present and lift a page from Byrne's Danger Unlimited and change and evolve the team to something different.

Alternatively, Gravity has recently shown how fragile we can be in space against the elements. That would fit the bill for the "cosmic rays".

I don't think there is anything wrong with updating the details as long as the heart of the character remains intact. Just look at all the fuss that was kicked up around genetically altered spiders and organic web shooters when the Raimi film first came out... largely forgotten now.

All they have to do is switch 60's Space Race to the XPrize race and problem solved.
