Does anyone else prefer Marvel Star Wars over the movies?

Growing up I never saw the original movie or ROTJ in theatres. I did manage to catch Empire, but 90% of my exposure to Star Wars was through the Marvel Comics series. It was one of my favorite comics ever, my favorite issue being "Death Probe". It's really interesting how different the Star Wars universe is when combined with the Marvel style.

I loved the bright colors they used...like blue Darth Vader with glowing red eyes, the fantastic stories and general weirdness of it. It was actually a lot more fun than the movies for me. I recently began re-reading the entire run and am loving it all over again. Really takes me back...

Be sure to check out that "Death Probe" issue! An awesome suped-up Imperial probe droid goes berserk on a killing spree.

I like the Goodwin/Williamson stuff, the other stuff isnt to bad either. Have to say Micronauts was pretty cool its half dozen issues to. Miss the feeling when Star Wars was sorta new to me.
Still prefer Harryhausen's Clash of the Titans and Sinbad:eye of the tiger over the original Starwars trilogy.

Dwayne, you have good taste my friend. YES! Those comics don't get enough respect. On the contrary, they get slammed by the modern expanded universe and fan community for the most part. There were fantastic concepts and characters. LOTS of memorable characters like The Tagge Family, Crimson Jack, Captain Valance the Cyborg, Rick Duel, Dani, Chido, the Hoojibs, Jaxxon, Lumiya, and of course my screen name character, Hedji. Lots of standout moments like the Luke Tattooine flashback with Biggs. Great artwork from Infantino and Palmer as well as Walt Simonson.

They had a sense of style and excitement and FUN that is very lacking in most modern expanded universe.

            Hmmmm....

I liked the Marvel stuff a lot. Still do. Their movie adaptions were kinda wonky.... especially Chakyn's art for the first one; but the other stuff, filler that it was really made the galaxy seem big. It filled in a lot of blanks; like the banking planet, or the Wheel.... "average people" stuff for the setting.

In the issues before empire the stories are more fanciful but after empire the run is really good and I was sad when it ended

UNtil this thread I had totaally forgotten about the series, though it was really good. I think I had most of them, I guess it was well over 100 issues. They created some cool characters for that book, some would have made some incredible action figures. It's kinda funny looking back at these knowing what we do from the Lucasfilm movies and how far off the rails both comic and film went. I gotta get me some of these back issues unless it's been collected.

Very cool. I'll pick one up tomorrow. What size would I need?

I'm considering making a custom of one of the characters from the early issues, one that doesn't like space carrots...

Might I mention there's a more "realistic" portrayal of the character?:

Don, that is awesome looking. I was hoping to go a little less cartoony with my sculpt and that's reall close to what I had in mind.

I Loved that run and still have them, i was thinking of selling them , but a CSowner said only the first and last issues are worth anything, so i might as well reread them. I there are some neat Customs to be made in there as well.

I've always wondered if he'd have got the hate if they'd made him look less cartoony from the beginning.

Mostly the last. It's one of the few I need and it's WAY expensive. Everything else I've found on the cheap. Eventually.
