Just finished issue 1. It's a wonderful event book. The art is beautifully rendered. It certainly breathes life into these old ideas we'd all read about.
My question is, will we be seeing an injection of the fun, fast-paced Star Wars style of storytelling? Star Wars had A LOT of humor in it. This has none... Yet. We have yet to meet the droids.
It's a gorgeous lesson in epic galactic history, but it will be interesting to see how much life and energy can exist in the seeds of Lucas' ideas.
Pretty faithful interpretation of the early draft screenplay (which I re-read before picking up the first issue), and the character designs are cool, incorporating elements of some of Ralph McQuarrie's earliest concept art.
Ok, finally read it. As a pretty hard core Star Wars fan, I really enjoyed it. Beautiful art.
The story reminded me of the prequels with the emphasis on politics and history over characterization like in the original trilogy. Man I was having trouble keeping track of who all the characters were.
I loved how the artist introduced the "Stardestroyers" by using my assumptions about their size in the first panel to trick me, then hitting me with the starfighter sized twist in the next panel.
I can't believe what happened to little Annikin (sic). Man, George, you were hard core. Probably a good idea not to start your movie like that though.
It's cool how "Ming-like" the Emperor is in this version and "General" Darth Vader is pure awesome sauce. (I would never use "awesome sauce" in real life, but it's 1am and I've run out of sensible adjectives)
The Star Wars Issue #2. We're getting into the meat of the story now. The first issue had a lot of politics (which I enjoy, one reason I like the prequel trilogy) and a lot of characters introduced. I realized upon reading this issue I had gotten the names of the Starkiller sons inversed; the younger son was Deak, and the older son is Anniken. There's not as much new stuff thrown at me in this issue and I'm not as confused this time around.
They explain where the name "Anniken" came from in the letters page. One of Lucas' inspirations was Disney's Swiss Family Robinson which was directed by Ken Anniken! Cool!
There are some odd jumps in the narrative. I think they are trying to squeeze too much story into the allotted space. It's not too jarring, just a few sudden jumps.
A beautiful and fascinating project. Bring on Issue #3!
NOT Death Star. I love the starfighter designs. Starfighter pilot names: Mace and Chewie.
