Finally canceled my last comic books!

I uses to be a diehard comic book reader (33 subscriptions at one time), but I slowly canceled more and more of them.
Too many cross-overs, too many reboots, too many characters dying/resurrecting/dying again...

And now, after 38 years, I let go of my last four titles (two X-Men, two Avengers).
To be honest, at this time I couldn't even make heads or tails of most of the stories, I guess I'm just too stupid to be able to understand them anymore.
Most of the time it's "huh, what, who's this guy?"
And all the pages are so smothered in details, I need to study them like a jigsaw puzzle.

I wish all my heroes happy lives (and countless resurrections when they die again), I'll miss them.

Yeah, I had to let Marvel go a few years back. They weren't the heroes I grew up with. Some were unidentifiable just by their personalities. It has to be blatantly obvious if I am noticing it! I switched to DC because I only knew the very basics of the characters and the ones I did know are all D list guys like Captain Atom, Ditko' Shade and Creeper, Kirby' Demon, Doom Patrol. JSA, Barry and Hal were back so I was happy with the output but everything I really like/ liked gets cancelled (Hawkman, Giffen' OMAC, Giffen' Doom Patrol, Threshold, Frankenstein and the Agents of Shade, Captain Atom, Byrne' Demon and Doom Patrol).
Unless it has Batman, or Superman connections, the books don't survive. I am hoping the new THUNDER Agents does well at IDW (crosses fingers)

      Hmmmm....

It'd be a good time to try something new. REALLY new, and not just "well.... maybe I'll read Superman now instead of the X-Men." There's just SO MUCH out there.

Say.... you live in Belgium. You should have acces to a lot of stuff. Don't the French and Italian comics have a fair amount of exposure there?

Don't totally give up on comics. Even if you are only into super heroes (and there is nothing WRONG with that), there are no end of great collected books out there to sample. I quit monthly comics cold turkey back in 2008, but I still buy plenty of TPBs and check out many from our local library. I've also revisited old comics I haven't read since a kid, and coming at them from an adult perspective is like reading them for the first time again.

          EEEEWWWWWW!!!!

          >there are no end of great collected books out there to sample

True. I loves me some superheroes too (I just don't think they're the end-all be-all) and those collections are fantastic for me. Mostly 'cos my preferred era for DC is the 60's, and for Marvel it's the 70's.... and those comics can get so spendy you're afraid to read them. But nowadays for $15 I can get 20 issues.

No matter what your preferred comic, nowadays is truly a golden era. It's ALL out there, and if you look hard enough, no matter what you like somebody's currently producing more of it. And things are even better if you're okay with digital. (I spend way too much time at the DCM.)

At one time I collected just about every title DC & Marvel put out, but slowly Marvel dwindled away and when DC went "52" I quit all but the Green Lantern titles (which hadn't changed too much from pre52).
But now I find that there are lots of great Indy titles like Walking Dead , etc that I really like. A couple recent gems have been Watson & Holmes, Wild Blue Yonder, Half Past Danger... stuff I never would have tried before, pumping all my cash into pointless crossovers and titles that are doomed to early cancellations.
I also find I have more interest in back issues , especially filling holes I've needed forever.

I like a lot of what Marvel is doing lately. Superior Spider-man (if you go in knowing Peter will eventually come back and just relax for 5 minutes and enjoy the story as it is), Captain America, Uncanny Avengers is great, Uncanny X-men, All New X-men (my favorite by far), and I'm hoping for big things from the all female X team in X-Men. Keep in mind I'm a DC boy. I just like the direction Marvel is taking right now.

For me DC is kind of...dying. I like some of the 52 stuff. I love Wonder Woman right now. Flash is great even if it's not Wally. Aquaman has been good. My favorite title in DC is Batman Beyond Unlimited which has been renamed Batman Beyond Universe for reasons unknown. I'm starting to get in to the Batman 66. I think it is really fresh and fun. I'm kind of secretly hoping for a George Reeves Superman cameo. Wont likely happen but it would be cool.

Also...READ SAGA! It's the best book on the shelves. Period.

The French have some decent stuff out, but not really in the superhero category. My wife reads a couple of French comics (and it's good language practice!)...
As for myself, I don't even read Dutch books anymore. I only read English.

For myself, I'm going totally retro and will start reading my back issues again.
I joined the X-Men with issue 23...so I think it's safe to say I have some reading ahead of me. Good times!

Good for you. Marvel and DC are done in my book. Canceled them last year. Only thing I am still picking up is Art's books like the new Hellboy book from DH. Also got hooked on the IDW Thunder Agents. They are my favorite comic book team. I hope IDW has a longer run than DC had.

Digital comics are also an option. I've downloaded tons of old comics ( more then I'll ever read ) but like you I gave up because they just weren't the characters I grew up with an loved to read.
