I love the packaging on this. I'll pick it up. I only have the Super Powers season right now.

What's the difference between this one and the Target set?

^This is from the early 80s season that emphasized the "cultural" heroes more, and they even got mentioned in the opening credits. This is also where El Dorado first appeared.

The Target set was from the 79-80 "World's Greatest Super Friends" season, featuring the 5 original SFs plus Zan and Jayna, where they mostly adapted literary stories (Oz, LOTR, Aladdin, King Arthur, Frankenstein).

                      Chris

Thank you for stating succinctly what has been puzzling and baffling at the same time (regarding these releases).

In my humble, uneducated non marketing degree opinion a thematic approach to the graphics and the artwork actually representing the contents of the release would have facilitated the sales of these items and would have at least in my feeble mind would have placed whoever is releasing this series in higher esteem (not that they care what I think).

I mean how much would you respect a studio that sold you a King Kong DVD with Jessica Lange and Kong on the cover and upon viewing the movie what you got was Fay Wray and a giant stuffed moving Kong. Not directly analogous, but it is nice when you lay down your hard earned money to get packaging that is congruent with the content.

To even those who grew up watching these on initial airings in the 1970's or even later on Boomerang or what have you, figuring out the sequence and contents of the ridiculously "careless" release / marketing strategy of the series requires some kind of mixed degree in philosophy / hieroglyphics / ethereal interpretations of items of unknown origin / etc. etc.

Additionally, it would have been nice, and at least temporally coherent to release the seasons in chronological order.

From a less tactful approach, a series that lasted for as long as the "Super Friends" did (and has) and that has touched as many lives, spawned as many products, and in all probability helped perpetuate (to preserve from extinction or oblivion) the superhero craze that has led to the current billion dollar movie trend in superhero movies has - not - gotten the respect it deserves.

Okay, I will get off my soapbox now.

Overall, I guess like with a lot of these types of releases when just have to be happy to get the product at all. I mean after all they are free...right?

^Yeah, WB's DVD arm doesn't seem to know one version from the other. The classic Alex Toth Superman SF design is depicted on the spine of the Filmation DVD cover. The same for the Aquaman Filmation series. And of course the Galactic Guardians season has package artwork using the Toth designs, while the show does not, and these more recent releases have style guide artwork from Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, when the last season was based on HIS work. WHEW!!!

Thanks Chris. In my mind I refer to the Target one as the "trippy set." I have it but haven't had a chance to really look at it.
