Oh this is a powder keg....

12 year old me threw up his popcorn after seeing this movie, some would say it was the butter. Me? I think it was sadness.

As bad as III is, it's watchable, and techincally well-done for the time. Superman IV is a better, and more sincere concept, but any given episode of Superboy looks better effects-wise. And it's edited with a rusty buzz saw.

If IV had III's budget and a tightened up script, it could have been a redeemer after Pryor's building ski-jump. But sadly, that wasn't the case.

I understand III actually did pretty well at the box office though. Even though reaction was mixed.

I remember walking out of it, kind of scratching my head at what had just happened. What happened was you got the Salkinds and Lester let loose with no Donner/Mankewicz filter at all. See Supergirl for more (minus Lester).

I didn't love 3, but i'd rather watch that than Returns or Smallville

I agree with Chris. The movie is watchable. But it does remind me that Lester got ENTIRELY too much credit for the work Donner did on Superman II. Those two films are night and day different.

I didn't realize it had been 30 years since Returns was released !

Funny, I thought Superman: The Movie was older than 30 years!

                  (JK, SIII is infinitely worse!)

I remember it well. SIII was a colossal disappointment after the epic action of SII.
The squandered opportunity was staggering. Think of where they could have gone with part 3.

I still occasionally watch the extended TV cut, but nothing can really redeem the movie... except perhaps for Pamela Stepehnson's cleavage.

I actually like SIII for several reasons...The Clark/Lana scenes in Smallville are some of the best Clark scenes in the entire series. He finally gets to relax a bit and be himself rather than the persona he created for the Daily Planet. The faux Kryptonite and it's effect on Superman is also a highlight of the series for me. I still love the "evil" Superman scenes and the junkyard fight between his good/evil sides is just awesome.

^Agreed. Those scenes are really nice, as is the chemical plant rescue. It gave Marc McClure more screen time than the previous films as well. Sure the frozen lake thing is kind of out there, but it's something you'd see from the comics.

I've always said there is a good movie hidden in III, behind Robert Vaughn's mugging and Richard Pryor's awkward un-funniness.

Yes, Brad was ONE of the Chuck Cunninghams. And the Brad character was the football jerk who told young Clark (Jeff East) he had a lot of work to do when they ditched Clark in Superman: The Movie.
