Funny...I just won a Pioneer NTSC/PAL Laserdisc Player on Ebay and was looking at LD's in the UK. It's been available in Widescreen over there for years:

The way they are making DVD's these days it's probably off of a Laserdisc master. I know that's what they did with the Star Wars original cut DVD box sets. I think they also did it with Robinson Crusoe on Mars.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
      The beauty that surrounds them
      Isn't it a pity".

      - "Isn't It A Pity"

        Why?
That film is awesome...very underrated, just like The Phantom from 1996. It also has one of Jerry Goldsmith's best scores ever.

I was just telling my wife I have NEVER seen this movie for sale on DVD or Blu-Ray. I too think it's underrated. A few flaws, but what film doesn't have those? Thanks for the head's up!

I've seen it on dvd, but its always pan and scan or full screen or whatever, never widescreen

I saw it in the theater at the time and was very disappointed by it, and I am a longtime fan of the old radio broadcasts. I thought the pHANTOM was a great representation of the pulp feel for that character

Great news! Very watchable, marred only by a few bits of misplaced camp humor that always seem to creep into Hollywood superhero films.

It wasn't too bad but like Dick Tracy and The Phantom it's a character the public doesn't know enough about or seem to care about. Some flaws in the film but not too bad. Nice role for Ian McKellan pre-Magneto and Gandalf.
